Very little understanding of Caesar. Has he even read the Gallic Campaign?
It was hardly a genocidal campaign and except for one instance, well on the merciful side of the customs of classical warfare. The Roman Republic did not grow to what it became by 'salting the earth' (that was an exception to the rule) it grew by co-opting local leaders and incorporating barbarians into the empire. In Gaul, a sizeable chunk of the army and at times nearly all Caesar's cavalry was Gallic. Caesar was not the brutal macho man this guy wants(most of the time), he spent a lot of time trying to bring gauls over to his side. The Romans grew great by doing a lot of the OPPOSITE of the things this guy wants. Second, Caesar's decision to cross the rubicon, defy the senate, and basically take the republic by force was the beginning of the end of all the good things the romans had going for them imho. |
