Default MacWorld 2006
Big surprise: No new iPod. Just a new remote with FM tuner.
Instead, Apple has announced two computers using Intel Core Duo:
The iMac, avaliable now
/
The MacBook Pro (IMO, a horrible name), avaliable in Feburary
/

Really looking forward to trying out these computers at the local Apple Store... I wonder how sales will do compared with non-Intel chip versions.
MacBook is an ok name... Adding Pro makes it sound hideous. I bet once the rest of the PowerBook line has Intel chips, they'll take the Pro name off.
BTW, can't wait for the Intel G5 PowerPC!

Iono... I just think the "MacBook" part sounds hideous. "iBook Pro" would've sounded better IMO.

Nope. The iBook is going to become "MacBook" without the Pro. Apple is doing two things here. First, part of their branding strategy is to have the word "Mac" on every computer. Second, they are cutting ties with the "Power" term associated with the old IBM Power architecture.

Not likely without actually doing some decent modding (and by this I mean physically soldering things to the motherboard.) Eventually, a software hack may come out, but I doubt it will show up before the next revision of Mac OS. Even when it gets working there are likely to be some major driver issues. On the other hand, you should be able to install Windows on the new intel Macs. Apple has publicly stated that it is possible, but they will not offer any support and it may void warranty.

Actually people have already installed and used OSX on regular PCs. Mac OSX has a specific function built into the operating system, called rosetta, which allows it to run on any X86 machine. Basically, if you really wanted you could install Mac OSX 10.4 on ANY machine currently running windows.

Its pretty much every Windows-based machine out there. I'm not sure if AMD's 64-bit processors, or any of the new dual-core processors would be a part of that, but I would assume they are.
Funny part is, Apple just announced today that although the new Intel Macs will not be able to run Windows XP, Vista will be able to run on them with now problem. The Apple rep even went so far as to say that Apple would not actively prevent people from being able to install Vista on Mac hardware.
On a slightly related note; these new Intel macs came at just the right time, because I'll probably be getting one of the mid-range Intel iMacs sometime within the next year and a half.

All Athalon, Sempron, Turion, Pentium, and Celeron processors are x86.
Maybe, if we're lucky, Apple will sell Macs pre-installed with OSX and Vista. Wouldn't that be so convienient?
