I tried entering it into my ti89 and could get 3 different answers but surprisingly it got 279 when entered exactly as it was written.
I don't much care for reverse polish notation, so DAL is fine for me as long as I have a CAS. I suppose it would be parenthesis first: 62/4(18) Then left to right division: 15.5(18) Finally multiply: 279 Yay order of operations ambiguity... |

I was just supporting that the calculator gave the answer that Gordo said. Edit: This was the standard Windows Calculator. I do have a scientific calculator, but I'll be damned if can remember how to use its higher functions. But Gordo didn't specify what type he was using. |

I tried it on a calculator and it gave the correct answer....if you input the equations in the correct sequence. |

Gordo's first answer was right. I just got out of an algebra class and order of operations says Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally...
P - parentheses E - exponents M - multiplication D - division A - addition S - subtraction Therefore, the problem would be solved as (12 + 6) = 18 4 * 18 = 72 62 / 72 = 0.86111111111 |
