I think you need to go back to school.
You mean whoever programmed the calculator's logic - I entered it exactly as written.

You probably entered it wrong.

Nope - get your own and see what result you get?

What is the accepted order anyway*? Within brackets, multiplication then division - that's what the calculator did?

Must be pushing forty years since I did that at school, EaG.

Both VPAM and DAL calculators return 0.8611111 if the implicit operator isn't included after the 4.

Thank Christ i'm thick, I just glaze over whenever maths is mentioned, the subject scares me to death.

Edit: I've changed my mind again. I think I was correct the first time.

I haven't done any of this since I left school years ago!

That makes sense, without it, 0.861111111, with it, 279 - which is what the mental arithmetic got - so much for using a calculator to check my work

I tried entering it into my ti89 and could get 3 different answers but surprisingly it got 279 when entered exactly as it was written.

I don't much care for reverse polish notation, so DAL is fine for me as long as I have a CAS.

I suppose it would be parenthesis first: 62/4(18)
Then left to right division: 15.5(18)
Finally multiply: 279
Yay order of operations ambiguity...

I was just supporting that the calculator gave the answer that Gordo said.

I tried it on a calculator and it gave the correct answer....if you input the equations in the correct sequence.

Edit: This was the standard Windows Calculator. I do have a scientific calculator, but I'll be damned if can remember how to use its higher functions. But Gordo didn't specify what type he was using.

Gordo's first answer was right. I just got out of an algebra class and order of operations says Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally...
P - parentheses
E - exponents
M - multiplication
D - division
A - addition
S - subtraction

Therefore, the problem would be solved as
(12 + 6) = 18
4 * 18 = 72
62 / 72 = 0.86111111111

That's not true, Multiplication and division (just as addition + subtraction) are of equal rank and are solved from left to right.

62÷4(12+6)
62÷4*18
15.5*18
279

I understand both way of working it out, but I don't know which is correct. First time I got 0.86111. But then I realise the 62 should be divided by 4 before 18 is multiplied by 4.

Divisions and multiplications are the same rank, go from left to right, it's very simple.
