Gordo's first answer was right. I just got out of an algebra class and order of operations says Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally...
P - parentheses
E - exponents
M - multiplication
D - division
A - addition
S - subtraction

Therefore, the problem would be solved as
(12 + 6) = 18
4 * 18 = 72
62 / 72 = 0.86111111111
Did you pass the class?

Divisions and multiplications are the same rank, go from left to right, it's very simple.
That's the way I always did it, Solve your equation left to right.

Which just goes to show that in a lot of professions, qualifications are worth close to nothing when trying to show how competent someone is.

I got a B at GCSE maths which i know isn't bad (that said, the school almost collapsed shortly after for poor results, but anyway...), yet I also know I never had to apply a left to right rule to answer anything given by a teacher or exam. There would always be brackets etc. You are never going to need to apply any kind of maths in a real world situation where left to right plays any part. It's also obviously a little bit of a grey area if many calculators get it wrong.

I'd almost say 279 isn't right because all rules like BODMAS state brackets are solved first. So 12 and 6 are added then multiplied by the 4. Or 12 is multiplied by 4, and added to 6 multiplied by 4. As in, brackets expanded first.

Even Google calculator has to add brackets to answer the question. The fault is in the question. Left to right is something made up to be able to solve poorly written problems.

62÷4x(12+6)

Brackets

62÷4x18

Division

15.5x18

Multiplication

279

For some reason when i first did it in my head i did multiplication before division like others.

I'm not saying your wrong, but how does the PEMDAS rule work then? Are multiplication and division not equal?

Technically they are but when you have a multiplication and a division to do in the equation, you go from left to right.

They are equal as in you take whichever comes first from left to right, you don't skip the multiplication to do the division first (like you would with a bracket).

Interesting to see a lot of mocking going on when the real lesson I learn from this is to use simple parentheses...

The answer is 3.14 by the way.
