What if the media started keeping track of human deaths every day instead of birds? How many people die in California in a day? In the US? In Europe?
Point being, there are a lot of unfortunate natural phenomenons that happen all the time that the general public doesn't keep track of. People just aren't bothering to find out if this is something new, or if birds always die in similar numbers without being turned into news headlines. http://blastr.com/2011/01/why-all-those-bird-deaths.php |

I'm sure if a load of people turned up dead in one place from an unknown cause the media would take an interest. BTW the plural of "phenomenon" is "phenomena", but don't worry about it, I've heard even experts get it wrong. In the U.S.: Usage Note: Phenomenon is the only singular form of this noun; phenomena is the usual plural. Phenomenons may also be used as the plural in nonscientific writing when the meaning is "extraordinary things, occurrences, or persons" or: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/phenomenons Definition 3B. I don't have access to the OED, so maybe it's different in UK English. Even so, it's totally irrelevant to me. |

You're missing the point. According to scientists, this is a common occurrence. The fact that the news is now reporting every time it happens doesn't change the fact that it's nothing out of the ordinary. |
