Using real is perfectly fine, but generally cost prohibitive. So FX get used. The FX used in Dr. Who aren't that good.
but for the most part they use real explosions and real fire etc then people complain they dont look real... because there used to fake FX lol

Dr Who, where to start?

I'm a big fan of the dr who series, but seeing as i dont live in the UK i realy didnt start with it till 2005. Atm waiting for the Christmas special and looking at the history a bit.
I want to watch some older seasons but which ones are watchable?

The first dr who looks realy cheesy, so thinking of skipping that.

Anyone who saw some more can give me a tip?

Classic Who had some good stories, but rubbish special fx (they didn't have the budget or technology back then). Genesis of the Daleks: one of the best, if not the best, stories in classic Who.

I dont mind the FX, just cheesy stories kill it for me.
You know which episode that was?

Classic Who didn't do a story per episode like they do now. Programmes ran for about half an hour and stories were split over 2-6 episodes. Just look for the story by name.

Also check out Earthshock and The Caves of Androzani (but try and ignore the "monster" which looks like a guy in a suit, fortunately he/it doesn't feature that much in the story).

the FX in current series is nothing to write home about either...

There's not much wrong with them, and they are certainly a million times better than in classic Who.

because they try to use real effects where ever possible not fake fire and fake explosions.

but i guess "real" isnt good fx

I would say 1970-1981 era with John Pertwee and Tom Baker.
