The entire industry is guilty of expensive text message plans, and these days in the day of data plans, we have expensive phone plans that honestly are no longer needed.

With services like Google Voice, all you need is a data plan these days. Everything could be done through data. Get rid of everything else and just give us data plans.

Amen to that.

Everything is already done over the same 3G or GPRS network *, they just give it different names so that they can charge for more services.

I think the only difference is that mobile providers prioritise voice over data so in overpopulated areas Skype-like plans might not always be so great.

Yeah especially when you consider that they are basically sending 140 bytes of data.

And on a CDMA network it's just piggy backing anyway.

IMO Sprint has the best rate plans in the states. $160/mo for 3 people (1 evo) with unlimited data, text, 1600 minutes, and unlimited calling to all mobile numbers. That's after tax BTW. Verizon is a freaking scam, and so is AT&T. Ever since AT&T bought out Centennial Wireless the service sucked and the prices went up.
