why is it crap? simply because you dont like it?
I dont have a problem with the fact that something such as Facebook or similiar things exist. And I dont have a problem with Apple. But these companies seem to attract 90% idiots who need to talk about their membership/purchase nonstop and tell other everyone about their totally uninteresting life. And when I hear "why dont you get a facebook account" for the tenth time at work, I'm getting defensive about the issue.

Okay so a forum - somewhere you post thoughts and opinions to people you've never met.

Facebook - somewhere you post thoughts, opinions, photos etc to people you know in real life.

What's worse?

So you're comparing the Futuremark members with the facebook community?

Hehehe...

No I am trying to illustrate that they are both purely digital mediums of communication and that they are what they are. But how can you say a forum is absolutely okay but a social networking site is absolutely terrible. They are much of the same thing, only difference is on one it's friends that are brought together and on the other it's strangers with a common interest.

Please explain.

Less than 5% of the world uses facebook.
If you narrow that down to 18-35 year old's with their own computer (ie, the developed world) i bet the figures pretty high.

I havent had many people telling me about how cool Futuremark is for quite some time now, and I'm not telling anyone else about this forum. Because no one is interested. That goes for all forums. You find a forum when you're interested in the topic its about. With facebook its different. I dont give a rats ass about whats going on in facebook, myspace, twitter and all the others, yet people try to "turn" me into a facebook user. Just like others try to tell me how cool their iphone is.

To make it short, this forum never annoys you. When you dont want to have something to do with it, you just stay away. Facebook kinda seems to crawl into our social life like a virus and is constantly being slapped into your face (hehe) even if you dont want to hear about it.

So when you said "Ehm, rule # 1: Just don't use facebook or similiar crap sites." you meant "I don't use them because in real life people talk about them to me and I hate that so nobody should use them, and on top of that niche sites are better because nobody talks about them so use them instead"?

No I meant "to avoid stupid stuff like that happening to you dont use facebook but tell people on the telephone, via e-mail or at a nice evening at the local bar".

Edit: Waait a minute, why am I even replying to this? I also think nobody should drive french cars because they are all pieces of crap. But that doesnt mean I want to forbid driving french cars. It's called "not liking something". Doesnt mean much, I'm just entitled to my opinion.

Phone and email is not a substitute...

If you don't 'get' facebook your probably narrow-minded, stupid, or don't have any friends.

I used facebook to remind me of birthdays, but the truth is that it annoyed the heck out of me most of the time. I just can't stand the behavior of some people who tend to think the whole world resolves around them and like we should all care about their status such as: my day stinks, yesterday went clubbing WAS AWESOME thx boby, taking a sh*t be back later, my bday party was awesome shame you guys didn't come etc.... I mean seriously it's stupid.. It's human to be only interested in ourselves and people put themselves on facebook (in general) to gain some sort of popularity with slutty pictures, add as many friends as possible etc.. worst part is that some people fall for that kind of stuff and worship the person with most friends.. Of course I'm talking about teens in general, but I know quite some people who change their status every 5 minutes and think everyone clicks their profile every few seconds.. sad really

Easy old pal, most people came to this "Benchmarking slash computer forum" to get information on Computers, to share their Benchmarking scores etc.
I bet for a large portion of members the main thought whilst joining here wasnīt letīs talk about me, myself and i,..
But that is pretty much the case with sites like Facebook and Myspace etc, itīs all about attention whoring and social networking etc.

Actually, I'd say most people these days frequent General Discussion more than anything as only a tiny percentage of the remaining users still overclock. FM is definitely most of a social networking site now than anything else IMO.

We are all talking about ourselves, whether it's putting our opinion forward or asking for technical advice, that is the nature of the internet.

that I'm not going to show my life to everyone and that I assume no one gives a rat's ass what I'm currently doing or did last weekend unless it's really special and noteworthy of course.. I'm here to read and discuss.. facebook isn't even close to a forum.. it's talking about yourself, showing off your own pictures, tagging people who don't want to be tagged and all other sort of annoying stuff.. I'm not talking about myself here and if I did it's way more private.. I know you guys don't know who the heck I am, whereas someone's facebook status can ruin someone's life..

I'm not saying facebook sucks, because I'm sure for some people it's quite the invention.. it's just not my cup of tea
it's almost necessary to have now because otherwise you'll be out of date

Hey I was only kidding man, sorry for offending if I did. I do understand where you are coming from. I guess I can spend hours on facebook having a laugh with my mates and not getting annoyed at all, but I come to FM and within about 5 minutes see a post somewhere that has me losing faith in all humanity.

you didn't offend me.. I'm merely trying to get a point across, that facebook isn't equal a forum...its purpose is way different

I call it shitfacedbook.

Simply because 99% of the photo's people post of themselves and their friends, they are wasted.

This new medium of socialising has created something odd. People go out and then pose for the camera demonstrating what a great time they are having out, it's as if the photo's have become bigger than the occasion
