Do you mean that you want to tether the device? It's an iPhone, it's not a wireless router.

EDIT

Unless you pay for your networks tethering solution you can't do it without a jailbreak at all OP.

Imagine the amount of sales Apple would get if they announced a built in iPhone wireless router capability. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/cool1.gif

And I honestly think they would, except that AT&T is very stingy when it comes to their wireless data network. It fully has the capability to do so, but their carrier shits their pants when too much data is being used.

Do you want to tether or do you want to acutally set up your phone as a wireless access point to which computers or phones can connect to get Internet? Because you can do both. The only caveat is that with the iPhone I don't think you will be able to have it working as a router while using it, but there is software.

That's not really a router though, it's internet connection sharing. All network traffic is being handled by an ad hoc connection. I don't think anyone would say your XP machine was a router just because you enabled network bridging.

Isn't this one of those FM no-no topics? I'd like to build a Hackintosh, but held off asking here, is it cool if I make that thread?

maclaudser 09-18-2009 10:46 AM

These forums has really done some changing the last few years. i really don't see what the difference is if you ask that, then what he is asking about a iphone.

Awesome. I wasn't saying asking that to be a smart ass either, I'd really like to get ideas for it. I might post in a little bit. I'd rather get info here instead of the hit or miss stuff I google.

what i want, is to be able to use my iphone as my internet connection for my laptop.
my SQL teacher had his iphone working as a wifi AP/router. he had his laptop connected to it for his internet.
i don't care how it is done. as long as it is legal and not jailbreaking.

I'm sorry but you will not be able to do it without jailbreaking the phone as I mentioned above. Apple simply will not let developers have that much control over the phone which is why the only way to do it is by using 3rd party software after jailbreaking the phone.

Jailbreaking an iPhone isn't illegal but you may come into trouble if you presented Apple with a jailbroken phone for warranty repair.

There is another issue as I would think that your mobile phone provider strictly prohibits the use of tethering or to use the phone in such a way. For example, o2 in the UK has these terms:

  • Unless a data or BlackBerry Bolt On is taken, your tariff will include O2 Web Daily under which data will be charged at £3 per MB up to a maximum of £1 per day (00:00am to 23:59pm). Once you have reached your maximum daily charge of £1, O2 Web Daily allows you unlimited use of Telefónica O2 UK Limited's Edge/GPRS/ 3G networks (as applicable to your handset), for personal internet use via your mobile phone. All usage must be for your private, personal and non-commercial purposes. You may not use your SIM Card:
    • in, or connected to, any other device including modems;
    • to allow the continuous streaming of any audio / video content, enable Voice over Internet (Voip), P2P or file sharing; or
    • in such a way that adversely impacts the service to other O2 customers.
If O2 reasonably suspectsyou are not acting in accordance with this policy O2 reserves the right to impose further charges, impose network protection controls which may reduce your speed of transmission or disconnect your tariff at any time, having attempted to contact you first. And they are looking for people who abuse their terms:

They wont be able to tell if I encrypt all of my traffic...
