Also, make sure Virgin isn't using something along the lines of "PowerBoost" that Comcast uses. It allows them to have a dubious claim on their speed by allowing the first 5MB of a file to be downloaded at 30mb/s. After the first 5MB, it throttles back down.

I have heard many people say that with virgin, once you first get a connection (of any speed) it can fluctuate all over the place for up to a week before settling down to it's true speed.

BTW, everyone on 20mb Virgin broadband gets a free upgrade to 50mb on 1st September I believe.

I don't think so. Because the modem and router that is required costs them too much. It is however going down to £28 a month on September 1st.

About 50mbit being "overloaded" compared to 10mbit... that is pretty hilarious that you could even think that, Since 50mbit use's a whole new docsis3 network, and its widely under utilized. I think I had this same "argument" with you before about 20mbit and 10mbit until I proved they are on the SAME network lol..

Virgin do not use "powerboost"

Chris0288: check your power levels on the modem interface.. I assume the guy that installed already checked them when he installed it, but it is worth rechecking.

Go on the customer zone website and look for the network TCP optimiser thingy they offer.

Normally fixes the speed of things.

Just got 50mb installed today and yeah...it's not 50 lol
Previously I was on 10mb, always got max speed apart from when they throttled it at peak times, but this has been quite confusing.

Tried alot of speedtest sites, one said it hit 40mb, most others were in a range of 15-30.
Downloading from Nvidia site a 100mb file was dodgey too, sometimes it would hit 4mb/s, other times less than 1mb, never had max speed straight from start.
Same with the ATI servers, usually those were fastest for me, but it would get MAX 4mb/s towards the end.

I've tried different configs too, tried it with the modem running straight into the pc, with old linksys router and with the new netgear one they gave us.

All much of a muchness tbh, I thought the old router would maybe slow it down, because it's a G router, or 54mb or whatever, but it doesn't seem THAT much slower than the new N series one they sent out.

Virgin Medias newsgroups are getting 2.5mb/s right now

The Q is, is this normal? should I be complaining to them?

No it was actually stevo_125 you had an arguement with in my thread http://futuremark.yougamers.com/foru...d.php?t=104290, and I meant to reply back in the end because my connection went to **** soon after my last reply in there and I never got more than 200kbps. After speaking to a Virgin tech from the UK he told me what stevo_125 said was actually correct and 10mb and 20mb are most certainly not on the same network, its 2mb and 20mb that are

Virgin themselves were spot on and advised me to swap back to 10mb and wait a few months because all users of 2mb and 20mb would be getting swapped over to the same docsis3 (or whatever its called) as 50mb which would result in much faster reliable performance, though to be truthful 10mb is absolutely fine for me so I'll probably stay as is.

Just quickly googled and saw you put an ip in to see modem stuff.

Info it's giving me is:

Power Level
(dBmV) 1.24 0.94 1.27 N/A

Not sure how to check SNR though?

I forget which page, but it is listed as Upstream Power Level (dbmv) and Down
RxMER (db) it is all in the modem page you got the other info from.

but otherwise with something like 50Mbps connection you are likely to be limited by the source

Pretty sure that
50mb = 50 x 1024kb = 51200kb
51200kb / 8 bits = 6400kb = 6.4mb/s maximum download speed.

The one person I know with 50mb from Virgin is getting a max of 6mb/s with an expensive router/modem and a wired gigabit network.

Try using a download manager and download a few files at the same time and see what the total download speed is.

A few ISO files should do the trick.

This is what I'm afraid of, need to do more tests tommorrow
Newsgroups are hovering about under 2mb just now on a download, usual;ly that would max out my 10mb connection, so really it's only 0.8mb/s faster?!

rubbish, should I phone them? would that make much difference?
