What do you do?
Forklift driver and order picker for a Nestle contract. Crap work, but its work, sort of. I can only find temp crap jobs around here, as no company is taking on. Had a phonecall from a company I applied for a permanent job with 4 months ago this week, and they asked if I would be interested in working for them after xmas. Got my fingers crossed, as temp work is **** and unreliable.

Being made redundant just after xmas
Have already applied for two jobs, just got to hope things work out. Unfortunately both are ~20 miles away, there is literally nothing where I actually live.

I'm here in the U.S. in the Bay Area in California. I work in I.T. doing systems administration. My job is fine as we get money and servers from a lot of the big tech companies. As long as they do well, then my workplace will continue to thrive. We are an important component in these companies developments and research.

The economy is not that bad in the U.S. I don't see soup lines and I don't see the grocery stores empty with no food. And the Dow is pretty healthy if you look at its overall growth since its inception.

Uhm, the DOW is not a measure for the current economy; it is a gauge of future economy. Growth from inception is a weak observation of the strength of the economy. The economy; although better here than in most parts of the globe; is suffering and has been on the decline for several years now; since the tech burst. What you see currently is just the beginning of our woes here in the US. Isn't California, or as Arnold calls it "Califlower", broke; along with 40 other states? Not sure what color the sun in "Califlower" is; but...where have you been?

I´m a Industrial mechanic,
tbh the job situation around here (although i live in a area with a high density of metalworking industry) looks rather bad.
Most of the companies around here finish parts for the car manufacturing industry, which has taken a rather big hit lately.
I´m rather lucky though, the company i work for mainly makes "BIG" bearings (for wind-turbines, boats/ships, etc and the market´s still running rather well.

At first it was rather quiet for the time of year, but now the last couple of weeks I'm not sure how to get rid of all the printing jobs we get.

We have done investments with 7 figure of numbers... Will post a pic or two soon ( need to resize them before the mods can infract me[rofl])

Business goes well and I have nothing to worry about as they are content with me. [thumbup]

I work in Retail as the warehouse person to my store.

But who i work for have told staff if it doesn't pick up then they be laying off & cutting hours after xmas.

Now my store made over 3 million profit last week & this certian company is the biggest retail chain in the UK.

And they using this resession as an excuse, to make more money by cutting jobs due to sheer greed.[thumbdown]

I think you mean £3m turnover last week, even for Tesco, running on a profit margin of about 6% they would need half a million cutomers on an average spend of £100 to generate £3m profit in a week.

For big companies, there are other factors to take into account other than generating profit; I doubt they're using the recession as an excuse to lay people off and make a profit, it's more probable that they are trying to maintain margins and manage their pension deficit so that when we come out of the other side there is still a business to run!

I'm an investment banker in a (now) government owned bank! How nice is that! I have job security, I can go on strike, work 40 hours a week...

...NOT.

I survived 3 waves of layoffs so far. Looks like I'm useful enough for the time being.

The only ones who have to worry are those who have bosses who are greedy. Because they are dangerous and hardly ever tell the truth untill it comes out. Than it usually means it is too late.
