After posting the notice of Nelson Symonds' death this morning I started musing on the fact that the three musicians that had the biggest impact on me as a budding jazz lover, growing up in Montreal, were all guitar players. They were all world-class masters of the instrument who, because they rarely strayed far from Montreal, remained relatively unknown outside their hometown, despite their immense talents and originality. They are all highly regarded by other musicians including some of the biggest names in jazz, but, as I say, were and/or are relatively unknown. They are Rene Thomas, Sonny Greenwich, and Nelson Symonds.
Just thought I'd share that. |

Greg is an instructor at McGill and was really important to any of us who got to spend time with him and play with him on a regular basis.
Here's a link to a tune from something he recorded live in the mid 1990's. I was sitting right next to the drums for this one every night! Care to guess who the drummer is? http://www.gregclayton.com/samples/G...isdemeanor.mp3 |
