For all those who live in states that use Federal minimum wage, start asking for pay increases!
Wages are going from $5.85 to $6.55 effective tomorrow July 24, 2008! Nice increase of 70 cents. Applies for at least 15 states that I know of including my state. So for those who get paid hourly, you need to start bugging your employers for a 70 cent raise unless you already make minimum wage. |

For three years I was right above the minimum wage mark. When NJ increased it a few years ago, my employer looked at me like I was crazy to ask for such a large increase as a dollar so that my pay wouldn't be that much closer to minimum wage. [thumbdown]
I don't work there anymore though. [thumbup] Now I have a little chuckle to myself every day on my way out when I see the minimum wage poster. There's absolutely no one working there that has to worry about minimum wage. ![]() |

Minimum wage in my area (Washington DC/Md/Va) means you will have a painfull life unless you are 17 years old and live at home.
I have trouble with my current rate (26.50). Bills, rent ($1200 + utilities), car payment, taxes, and a few other extras leaves me with little to no money at the end of the month. I mean if I got rid of my cell phone plan and stuck with pay as you go, stop buying a few things I want, and cut down on electricity bill then I would have a few hundred bucks left over but still is not much for the area I live. My car drinks too much gas and I live far away form work. Metro rail is not exactly cheap! It costs around 14 dollars round trip with parking included. 14 bucks a day just to get to work and back. But I am lucky I live in this area and fortunate to be making the money I am ATM. I have friends in Michigan that are REALLY suffering and I am trying to bring them here. I am trying to help them find a nice job in the IT field in my area (perfect area). |

Its kinda funny. When I first moved out on my own about 7 years ago I was making around $14 an hour give or take. I was doing really well, I was living from pay check to pay check, but I made all my bills on time which included my apartment, truck and utility's.
Now I make $25/hour and I still live paycheck to paycheck. My truck payment has been replaced with a motorcycle payment for about the same a month and I now have a house for about the same as I was paying for an apartment. Yet I struggle more now then I ever did back then. But on the other hand, im less content with my life now and I find myself buying useless crap just out of boredom. Thats where most of my money goes. |

To my North I have $400 apartments that are as good as the Wests $700 apartments. Just in different counties is the only difference really. Thus the $400 apartments are away from the nicer city. Still has a city but not as big, or nice as the larger city. |

Wow! $1,200 on rent!? Now that totally is not needed. I am sure that you can still find really nice places around for at least $800. If I was popping that much down for rent, even if the place was poo, I would rather invest that money in a house, because if you don't you are basically throwing that nice some of money away. At least with a house, you can always at least get most if not well more of your "rent" money back. The further I live from work the cheaper it becomes. Also furthers away from work = lots of traffic. Right now I live about 28 miles away from work and during traffic it takes about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes. An avg apartment close to the metro rail system is about 1400-1500. Right in my area we have small 3 story town houses that go for 700k.... Single family houses range from 800k-1.1m and they are bunched up together. This is pretty reasonable price! I wish I could buy this right now... It's EXACTLY how I want my condo to be! http://www.weichert.com/search/reale...ypeid=28&pg=18 |
