Going down hill? Turn off your engine and coast. DON'T DO THIS! (general advice, not to che)

It might be safe for some cars, but unless you KNOW it's safe, don't do it!

Depending on the car, some of your critical controls like the BRAKES or STEERING might stop working when the engine is switched off!

Anyway. One of my tips.
WALK!

It takes me about 45 minutes to walk into the shops. And I've found that's not a big deal. I've even done 3 hour shopping round-trips on foot.

Walking, it's good for your body, it's good for your mind and it's good for the environment.

I usually walk to buy fresh groceries nearly every single fine day. 1-1.5 hours of walking a day. It's great.

About the tips and tricks. The one about tires is a good one. Keep them inflated. The one about speed is also a good one. Slow down and you'll be spending less fuel. The rest (shuting down the engine) aren't worth the trouble.

Coasting downhill is very dangerous. It makes it a lot more likely you will go out of control. Doing it on any hill where it would benefit you, would put you at significant risk (it's not going to help on a short hill anyhow, and long hills are where the danger lies).

Rolling down your windows creates drag inside the car.

Turning off the engine makes much, if not most, inoperable, and is certainly ill-advised.

Honestly, I can't see any reason that you have to drive more than we do. I'd imagine evernything is more spread out in America which means you must drive more.

Taking it out of gear would accomplish much of the same without losing the power steering and power breaks.

Well Denmark is 100 km wide, so there's no point driving further, is there?

My work takes me to various cities throughout the province (this can be up to 500km each way) and there is no suitable mass transit. Everybody in my position has the same choice - automobile.

I just wish the rest of you guys would take the damn bus so I could go faster.

We are paying $1.10 a litre now. If my conversion is accurate (3.785 l/gallon ?) that equates to $4.16 a gallon. I've heard talk of $1.50 / litre by the summer.

Gah, living in the sort of low density cities that exist in most of America would drive me insane. Here we've got massive apartment complexes all over the place and pretty much zero single story buildings so everything you need is generally within a few minute walk away. It's nice So is having a very good subway system...

Not necessarily, it is more efficient to leave it in gear and have your foot off the clutch for as far as possible rather than coasting out of gear or with your foot down on the clutch. But then you are probably all driving automatics.
