Default Scientists promise not to destroy the Universe!
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23844529/?GT1=43001

I have been keeping track of this story for years. I know the probabilities of any of this stuff happening are so small thats its ridiculous....but boy, doesn't it give ya' the cold, late night sci-fi goosebumps?

I first got interested in this after reading a report from the RHIC (years ago) where scientists addressed these scenarios and promised they would not destroy (really, cross their hearts) the Universe!

http://www.bnl.gov/rhic/docs/rhicreport.pdf

What a promise to have to make! And isn't it scary we have to make it!

EDIT:

To add even more doomsday fun: some scientists are even talking about creating whole new universes. They promise that these new universes have no chance of expanding in such a way as to swallow or endanger our own. Comforting, huh? [rofl]

Typical of the human ego isn't it? If mankind is going to become extinct through our own doing then the odds are we will end up taking out the whole solar system down with us. It will be a sign for all aliens out there who pass by - We were human, look how awesome we are at suicide.

I think more typical of human behavior is suing someone over something you do not understand but THINK is bad.

More details. As to if its really possible, or just weird science and to much ego, how the heck should I know?

The people who do know, seem to be taking these things seriously, so unless we can prove them wrong, we should probably take it serously as well.......for the moment.

lol, the guys suing them do understand, or did you not read the article?.... these guys behind the suit are scientists...they are just more the type who were betting the manhatten project would ignite the atmosphere and destroy the world.

I myself see nothing inherently wrong in giving 3-4 more months so more study can be done (which seems the suit asks for), but i also do not think the collider will cause the end of the world or universe for that matter.

My large hadron collider usually has woman running in feat, so I understand the concern for safety.

With creating the H-bomb people didn't know if the skies would burn as well. It didn't.

Go ATLAS, for me you may go do your work! Surprise us and teach us.

http://atlasexperiment.org/

This link is good and will give you alot more info than some crappy news article about scared people who want to bring a lawsuit to stop discovering the unknown, if it'll succeed that is.

People shouldn't be afraid for the unknown.

indeed but you should be scared of what might happen.

perhaps this is where the big bang originated from....

you know almost as if the universe is on an infinite loop starting and ending with the atlas experiment.

time and existence starting from a single point, man evolves after eons and cannot quite get his head round the whole how did it all happen using complex mathematics, invents atlas to discover the origins of the universe, flips the switch and simultaneously destroys and creates the Universe again and the loop continues.

and when we flip the switch just for a billionth of a second we see it was us who created the universe

weird eh

Not if you want that technology yourself.

And to think I used to have it but deleted it. I got it from a mater of mine with some other cool pictures. I can see if I can find it again, but its unlikely.

Wouldn't the Earth have to be seated at the center of the universe for that to happen. otherwise distant galaxies will be to far away to be destroyed by the blast and remain behind.

There actually was a serious theory once (forget what it was called) that if the universe had enough mass to slow down, stop and then collapse back to the primordial monopole before exploding into another big bang, that time might reverse as well and play the entire story of the universe all over again.

Backwards.

[rolleyes] There will always be idiots who stand in the way of progress. I personally can't wait for the LHC to come online. Maybe I'm biased since I'm into physics.

Cyclic Model? I've heard of the collapse if there isn't enough energy to overcome gravity, but not the reverse time thing.
