M:TG is expensive, I couldn't keep up with all the expansion sets. I started during the Urza's Saga and quit right after the 6th Ed. If you're up against experienced players, you'll have to sell both your kidneys, one lung and a leg to actually win. I just hate running into people with ridiculously powerful combo of cards that can wipe me out in like four turns. But, sealed deck tournaments are fun, it's purely luck and how you draft your deck plus everyone is on equal footing. [thumbup] |

I've only played a few times, but it was pretty good. I was too much into SW:CCG to get into Magic, and now I just don't have the money or time.
I do like to play with others when they have a deck for me to use. Yeah, it takes away from the surprise of a custom deck, but hey, it's still a good time. |

Lol, build cost $295... brings back memories. Of course I didn't spend that much on it though, got most of them in packs. And personally, I prefer bigger decks. They're just more fun, and you can cram in more good cards. However, when playing competitively you just can't go over 60-65 cards, or you won't draw what you need. I've gotten so used to building 60 card decks that's all I ever make anymore. You know, there are different levels you play magic at. There's the most basic level where you're just playing with friends, and the decks you build revolve around creatures. They're usually huge decks, and built with some crazy 3-4 card combos, and based around being fun to play. Also decks that are good for multiplayer. There's the mid-level, where you try and take those decks and make them really competitive. Still mostly based around creatures, lots more control cards. Designed more for 1v1 or tournament play. Advanced, where you realize creatures are fragile things, and can't be relied upon. Combos have too low a percentage chance of working, so you substitute with disruption. That deck I posted is I think the first "advanced" deck I've really built. Pro level... way better than I am, lol. It's strange, looking back on all my old decks. I can see distinct and precise lines between them. The skill and style, they're so vastly different. It's like watching yourself evolve. Like going back and watching some demos of your first FPS game, where you didn't know what "strafe" was. Holy crap... sorry for the long post. ![]() |

When I first started I built 80 card decks and quickly found that I wasn't winning with them. 60 is the way to go. I still find that Direct Damage coupled with disruption (blue counterspells) is still a very good route to take. Or you could opt for the weeny creatures route but then you have to consider what's the other aspect that you can take up to bulk them up (usually white or green enchantments, rancor is my all-time favourite) or you have a combo to play (black's graveyard resurrection and white's worship). But it all depends on the current cards anyway. But deck building is half of the fun, the other half is watching in glee when your strategy is executed without flaw and your opponent is being mutilated, crushed and trampled underfoot.
![]() Oh yes, rancor on a 3/2 flyer that can appear on the first round is a very scary experience for my friends when I was playing back then. ![]() |

Hehe, "evolve." I could say the same about my SW:CCG experience. SW:CCG, is that cards like this? http://www.moscroatia.com/slike/ccg_velika.jpg I've got a whole box full of them! There happen to be any old ones you need? And Rancor is good. Really good. That's actually the most expensive common I've ever seen, lol. |

[yes] I figured you would know what I meant. I haven't played in so long that I don't know of anything I'd need. My decks are still in the forms they were when I was at my peak playing skill, which was probably 3-4 years ago. |

Last friday, an old nemesis brought Dragonstorm to FNM, and brought the 2005 state champion and dralnu with him.
It isn't that I have any particular problems with these decks, they're undeniably good. But my metagame was just starting to get FUN. Everyone was building a new deck each week, and it was all much more fun and relaxed. Likely why the guy brought Dragonstorm, figured he'd recoup some of the points I stole from him with my mono-white deck. ![]() |

Discuss M:TG!
Personally I stick to Type 2 tournaments, because I can't afford the older cards you need to make a competitive Type 1.5 or extended deck. Right now I'm playing a black/white control deck, whose main focus is to delay the game as long as possible using lifegain, wrath, and permanant destruction, until I can get out a finisher like debtor's knell or loxodon warhammer + mourning thrull. Hypnotic specter and castigate to keep your good stuff from hitting the board in the first place. It seems to work pretty well, I went 4-0 with it last friday night before I had to forfeit my last game to go to work. Though I think that last guy would have beat me, his was similar to mine but with some blue counterspells mixed in, which I can't compete with. I don't have the dual lands to splash colors like that. |
