Default I think i'm trying to get scamed...need help
I posted some things FS on my wife's facebook account and got a message from a person with no ID picture or network (only put it in the College and Baton Rouge area). Well, he messages us and asks us to contact us via email. He also spoke in very broken english but I didn't want to assume he was a scammer because I know a lot of international people. Well, after a few emails of asking where he lives, and doing some research, i'm about 85% sure that he is a scammer. I already gave out our address and hope nothing bad can come out of it but maybe you guys can help me out. Here is the email account (tried to get it the most I could accurate I could):

Could you please tell me where you live? If you live nearby we could meet you to deliver the monitor and camera(for no extra cost)...if not, then you will have to include about 15 more dollars to your check to cover the shipping and handeling costs to send out the packages. Please let me know what you would like to do about this.
Thanks,

ME:
Hi,
Are you still interested in the camera and monitor? I need your payment of either 170$ if you are planning to meet in baton rouge to recieve the items, or 185$ if you want me to mail the items to you. Please let me know if you still want to go through with this, because I have other people who are interested in the items as well. If you would like them mailed to you, I need you to include an address.
Thank you,
Crystle

Ok, after asking him after 2 emails where he lived, I got really suspicious and worried b/c I gave him my address and he won't tell me where he lives. I google'd some info on facebook marketplace scams and a lot of the stuff he is doing sounds the same as what this guy is doing. Now what do I do? I actually gave him my address (didn't give out our phone) so is there any harm that could be done? What if he really does send me a "cashiers check". How do I know that I won't get scamed? If you guys get give me some advice i'd REALLY appreciate it.

Hmmm, would also be suspicious as he doesn't seem to grasp your questions and is concentrating on address/check matters. He is also ignoring the point that there is a charge for P&P which means a total of $185 as you have repeatedly mentioned, rather than the $170 he keeps bringing up.

Personally, I would clearly and politely point out your concerns and explain that unless you are satisfied with the response, you are not comfortable with continuing with the sale.

SCAM! [surrender]

Lesson #1: NEVER EVER give out your address until the deal is sealed and you are 100% certain it's not a scam! EVER!!!

so why you trying to get scammed then ?

pretty silly if you ask me.

/joke aside.

Ive been scammed on eBay and its a horrible feeling, knowing that some complete weirdo has your full address and could turn up unannounced to bludgeon you to death with a French baguette.

and to add injury to insult.

pay pal decides that your the one who has to pay the charge back, despite your dispute with a no-show Scammer that blends back into the interweb of ebay.

thats why I don't do online auction sites any more.

I wouldnt sell things to people on here either unless they were very well known by me which luckily I do know the majority of you chasps.

Hopefully no unexpected visits...

but most of these scams are from other parts of the globe right?

if anyone EVER ends an offer mail with "Thanks and God Bless You" or anything about god/bless in the signature then in my books the deal is off.
Either they a scammer from africa or in my books bloody offensive, i dont want to have some stranger preach at me,.

Anyway as to a visit, i bet a large wager on the fact no one will turn up, however as for a case of ID theft i'd be worried.

Its a classic scam thats used with cars normally. Think they call it the West African Advance scam (or something like that). I was nearly scammed with this when I sold my MR2 a couple of years ago.

The scam is basically that they send you a forged/fake cashier's check. When you take it to the bank they will check it and it will appear to be fine and they'll give you the cash. Then a week later they'll realise its fake and take their money back. So you'll lose your item + the cash.

A couple of tell-tale signs for this is the broken English, weird name of the buyer, is happy paying the asking fee (or over) and will deal with bankers drafts or cashiers checks.

Well, I gave out only my address, I should be ok right?

Anyone can get an address by sending an item over ebay, so there should be no difference?

The difference is that someone legit more than likely won't want to scam you in the first place but a scammer only has one intention...

Please see this as a lesson learned. When trading online be reserved until you're 100% certain you're safe because as you've demonstrated here, you've had reservations since you started the correspondence with this guy.

I'm sure you'll be fine even having given out your address but just keep an eye on your bank/cards for a while to make sure there is no untoward behaviour on them.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Addresses are readily available all over the internet.

The only thing to worry about is if this guy was legit and already has sent you a valid cashiers cheque. He may be a bit steamed over this.
