Homemade Computer/Studio Desk

I just finished up the studio desk I have been working on the last several months.

I designed it on Google Sketchup – a nice free CAD program great for this kind of stuff. It is made out of cabinet grade birch plywood. The top is made from ¾” birch with a 1/4'” layer of cherry on top (a solid inch of cherry would have been way too cost prohibitive). The speaker stands are made from birch with a cherry vaneer on top. I used some ebony aniline dye for the bottom half and the sides of the speaker stands. The top and top of the speaker stands are all natural. I finished the top and the speaker stands with a diluted gloss polyurethane (I added a 50% mixture of mineral spirits so I could wipe it on with a cloth versus a sponge brush – it took much more time and many more coats, but it came out like glass). The bottom half was finished with a semi-gloss polyurethane and a final wipe of the gloss mixture I created.

I added a small shelf in the back to hold all the cables, power supplies, etc.

It's about 8 feet wide to give you an idea of dimensions...

Looks nice man. I didn't even know about Google Sketchup until you mentioned it...could be useful to me.

Very nice work there man. Wish i had the room for a computer desk like that. Now the what we need is to see your computer all setup on there with all the other goodies on it.

Extremely nice! Now if your computer doesn't look as good as that desk I'm going to come to your house and confiscate the desk, you can have the computer. :)

I chose varnish (polyurethane) because it is arguably the most protective coating. For shelving and such, I may have used something like tung/linseed oil or a shellac. But since the surface will get quite a bit of use, I chose the hardest and most protective finishing.

You really cannot go wrong with varnish.
