- Bluray is way more expensive and difficult to manufacture. There's not that many production lines for it.
Not for long :-

Since the announcement[1] of the joint development in 2005, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media and Pioneer have also been promoting the standardization of organic dye recording media, and this spring, a recording format (Low to High Type format) for organic dye BD-R has been adopted into the BD-R Format Ver. 1.2[2].
With this standardization, the mass production of organic dye recording media has now become possible with BD-R. Discs with organic dye do not require large-scale investments in facilities so that the current coating facilities for CD-R and DVD-R can be used for BD production lines with only minor adjustments, making low priced discs a possibility. http://www.itnews.it/2007/1023121801...ride-film.html

Yes, of course it's going to get cheaper as technology develops. Truth is that they've poured shitload of money on it already even if it gets cheaper in the future. I assume making Warner switch wasn't cheap either ;-).

Tbh ?
I donīt think the whole HD movie stuff is worth it.
Maybe my eyes arent the best anymore, but imo the difference between the new formats and a normal DVD being upscaled just isnīt large enough for me to even think about making the change.
And yeah iīve seen a few HD/BR movies on great setups, still my opinion stands

For you sure and maybe it is your eyes. I used to have smallish 720p TV and I could easily see the difference between upscaled DVDs and HD-DVD, the detail is pretty stunning. These days I have a 1080p TV and Blu Ray and again I'd choose HD over upscaled which remember can't add any detail that isn't there. That said it's unlikely I'd buy any films on Blu Ray not at current prices anyway it's not worth it, I'll stick with rentals.

Current prices? I just checked Amazon and they are selling many new movies for 20 bucks, some older for even less. And there are often buy one get one deals. Of course that's US where the battle is going on and other areas have different pricing. Some discs don't have region codes though :-).

And a months rental with Netflix costs what? Why would I rebuy a title I've probably already owned on DVD when I can rent a dozen titles for less?

Well some like to own movies and watch favorite movies again. Some have a bit of a collector in them, others don't I guess.

I've actually pretty much stopped buying DVDs for now. Maybe one every now and then if it's something that doesn't benefit from HD or is not likely to be available in HD anytime soon. Just waiting for the dust to settle before investing into a HD player.

I used to own lots, my VHS collection was massive and by the time I left the UK my DVD collection was coming along fairly well. I just don't seem to have the desire to own any more when I can easily rent the same title again when I need to. I think this partly has to do with very few of my must own movies having appeared on HD who knows when Head or Repoman will appear on Blu Ray? And the rest of my favorite movies I mostly never bothered to buy on DVD so that's a non event. I think HD-DVD/Blu Ray don't really benefit from me, I either have films I love that came out years or decades ago which I already viewed so many times I don't feel the need to have a copy anymore or there's newer titles which I've yet to see that I just want to rent. In someways I guess Blu Ray is a bit of gimmick at the moment with only 500 titles I'll rent something like Robocop for the nostalgia and the novelty of seeing it in HD.

I have wondered if I'd buy the Sergio Leone box set when it finally comes out but even that I've seen them so many times It's unlikely that they'd get viewed more than once every year or so. Obviously I'd be forced to buy Star Wars if that were ever to come out and National Lampoons Christmas Vacation is one movie I must have a copy of but not til Xmas obviously.
