Default When Sky Show A Film In HD - What Is Their Source ?
When sky hd shows star wars in hd , what is their source as star wars has not been released in hd. Are they doing their own hd conversions and how is it done?

Could they not be taking it directly from a film source?

Well seeing as SD is crappy compared to HD, I think they just show the DVD version upscaled a bit.. Wil make a hughe difference from SD anyway.

lot of assumptions being made here..well, heres another one I would have thought they have the 35mm film reel - they can then scan that in whatever resolution they want. I thought this was how they made older movies into HD - because 35mm holds so much detail and has such a high resolution that they can be rescanned to whatever res anytime

Which is basically what I said.

Well the new movies were shot in HD, not sure what they are doing with the old ones though. I wouldn't be surprised if they actually have it stored in HD when they did the DVD release (and just down converted the video to SD for DVD).

They could have the movies on BluRay in time for Christmas if they really wanted, but I apparently Lucas is more interested in releasing them in 3D next.

It really all depends on which Star Wars movies you are talking about because the latest three were shot on 1080p HD video. Then as others have mentioned older movies shot on 35mm film get either a 2 or 4k film scan.

its simply a high res scan of the original film... sometimes the same source is used for hddvd/bluray which why sometimes theres no difference

I always assumed 35mm film was still higher quality than a 1080p Blu-ray/HDDVD. Wouldn't shooting a film on 1080p video actually be lower quality than traditional film, or am i completely wrong here?

You would be correct. HD video is a lot cheaper to shoot on but also in the case of the newer Star Wars films since they were going to use so much chroma keying and compositing anyway I suppose Lucas figured it would make sense to use video instead.

There is an interesting bit here on digital film vs 35mm, some might find it of use. They discuss the difference of resolution between the two formats, as well as other things relating to movie making.

HD masters have been made from the 35 mm film.

DVD isn't the reference for everything that happens to a movie.

So what's old Mr. lucas going to do when we all want a 4000p version for our 'Super HD' screens in a few years time?....

.....Or is this link basically saying we only ever see up to around 1500 lines of resolution anyway?

First of all... Sky would not be doing the film scanning of the old Star Wars films. During the digital remaster of Star Wars there is no doubt there would have been HD scanning of the film. Just because they relesed it on DVD doesn't mean that they only scanned at DVD res. They would have done everything HD and then made a DVD from that. So it could be quite possible the TV networks can now buy a HD version of the film.

Star Wars 2 and 3 were shot using digital HD cameras. So no film involved. If anyone has the Star Wars 2 DVD's, the extras extensivly talk about how they used this digital tech.

He's not really looking to the future then eh. [thumbdown]

Actually, thinking about it i don't think having any of the newer ones in 4000p would make me buy them again anyway (well, maybe episode 3).
