Default 2 weeks notice or walk out?
I recently discovered that I hate my job to the point that I found a job that pays much less where I will be happier. They want me to start this upcoming weekend. I am scheduled to work tues-fri but I really want to go get my stuff from work and tell them "see ya". The state where I work is an at will state meaning the employer can let go, or the employee can leave at any time. I have usually given a 2 weeks notice but I am wondering if there are any liabilities involved in staying with a company after you have given your 2 weeks notice. How many of you give a 2 weeks notice before you leave a job?

Another thing I should add, my immediate supervisor told me that I will be losing my job by the end of September anyway along with a few others from our department since they are finished with a research campaign.

The only reason people around here give 2 week notice is if they want the chance to come back to the employer. If you never want to go back to them, then they are skrewed and shouldnt of treated you bad, just quit and walk out.

I agree with Luthair. If you hate it- pack your things and leave.

How many of you give a 2 weeks notice before you leave a job? I've given a 1 day notice and stayed before. My boss was yelling at me saying that if I didn't do better she'd fire me. I said I couldn't do better and I'd finish out the day. An hour later she said I didn't have to leave. [rofl]

Give a notice. You never know what the future holds. Leave like a professional.

Do you have a contract of employment, what does that contain regarding notice periods?

Indeed, it is always better to leave on a professional note, than it would be to just up an go. But, if they have a work at will policy, than that's fine as well considering that it is a mutual understanding that you are not obligated to show up to work.

Don't forget, if you've got other references, it hardly matters anyhow. Just never use that place of employment as a reference.

The position finishes in a few weeks, anyway.
Normally I'd say to give notice but, under the circumstances, give notice past the end of the week only if you're after a reference.
The pay is not really a relevant point as you'd've needed a new job when this one ended.

When i quit my job a couple of years ago, i just handed in my notice and told them im taking the 2 weeks as holiday i was due. Walked out straight away and never looked back! They still paid me for the 2 weeks too.

You will definitely want to give your 2 weeks notice, especially if you plan on putting it onto your resume.

I just went to work and got my personal stuff and told the supervisor on duty to walk me out to the front gate. Invigorating.

At the first of this month, I told my Manager that I am out at the end of the month. So my last day would have been the 31st.

About 10 days in, after I gave them my 4 weeks notice I started getting crap. A co-manager who is not hirer ranked or lower ranked then I started acting like she was General Manager. 3 days of that crap and I just left. I was supposed to work with her in the morning, but instead the night before I made the store look like crap, had nothing set out for her, and never showed up the next day.
So I only served 2 weeks out of my notice. I just figured, I am quieting anyways, I don't really NEED the money, and I already have my reference, so I am out of this bi/ch.

I have my source though. The AGM who got let go a few weeks before I left, we became great buddies and he is my reference.

As long as you have a buddy who will give you a good reference no matter what, then just leave. If you wouldn't get one anyways, or don't care to have one, just leave. Having giving them a notice is just going to piss you off even more and quicker like it did me and you may not even serve out your full notice.
