I dunno, as far as I am concerned, the most influential director is Spielberg. He essentially invented the blockbuster movie.
That is a joke.. right?
[rofl] at least he didn't say George Lucas

I saw Seventh Sign for the 2nd or 3rd time not too long ago on IFC. I also recently saw Virgin Spring i think it's called, which imo was just as impressive. I'm pretty sure those are the only two i've seen but both on the surface are extremely visually impressive but moreso, deep and multilayered as far as themes, symbolism, ect.. Seemed to me they are both sort of like the poem "The Wasteland" One needs quite a bit of classical and religious background to approach let alone fully grasp the work. In general, this is a good thing. Something like the Seventh Sign is literally worlds away from something like Jaws or E.T.

Well good old George has done his part for the movie industry too, but yes, I thought I would be pushing a bit too much to suggest him.

Although I have to say, I think there is a bit of intelliectual snobbery going on in this thread.

agreed, but saying Stephen Speilberg is the world's most influential director will do that to people
