Default Who lives in Ireland?
I've got a honeymoon to plan here for next March 23 (yes, I'm getting married BTW, hoo-ah), and I really want to go to Ireland. I've been looking around on the web and although many of the resources have been fairly helpful, I'd like to get some Onion insight here. What places would be the best to stay a week at? What sites should we see? I'm not looking for beaches much, as I've got plenty of that crap here in Florida, so I'd like to stick to anything else basically. This site is cool, but they only seem to cater within the UK, which doesn't help me a whole lot unfortunately. Thanks everyone.

I live in the north of Ireland which technically is a different country but we have some nice places to visit up here. Let me know if you'd entertain the idea and I'll let you know more.

Have you tried:

http://www.nci.ie/holiday/
http://www.ireland.ie/
http://www.tourismireland.com/

I quickly went through the ireland site and places i didnt see that i visited as a child werent on it from what i saw

Irish National Heritage Park: http://www.inhp.com/
http://www.heritageisland.com/Irish%...age%20Park.asp

Craggaunowen: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craggaunowen
Crannog: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crannog

Newgrange: http://www.knowth.com/newgrange.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newgrange
The Megalithic Passage Tomb at Newgrange

Didnt think there was that much to see here, but turns out there's a crap load. There's also Waterford castle / The Island Haven:
http://www.jpmoser.com/waterfordcastle.html
http://www.waterfordcastle.com/

Reviews /prices: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...Waterford.html

By the way its called the Island Haven because its on its own seperate little island, you have to take a very short ferry ride to get to it (maybe 100metres or less) You then stay in the castle house which is basically a really old castle on the outside and 5 Star hotel on the inside.

If you want to see a lot of unique tourist attractions you will have to travel across ireland to see them

That's actually what we were planning on doing. 7 days was the original goal, although I may extend it to 10 if I can afford it. There's a whole lot to see and it's something that I won't be able to do very often in my lifetime no doubt, so I'd like to at least spend as much time as possible there. Thanks for your list, I'd not been to those sites yet and they seem very helpful. I'll look over them and see if I can plan out a timeframe for locations to visit.

I recommend seeing the Cliffs of Moher. There are pics at the bottom of the linked page. I thought that this one was really nice.

By the way, only go there (to the cliffs) if your Fiancé is not a red-head. Local legend has it that many nice lads have been thrown off the cliffs due to the temper of the red-headed lasses

I worked there for a while back in the 90s. I stayed in Waterford, which was a great town. I would suggest visiting the ring of Kerry, Dingle and Killarney park. All of them were absolutely beautiful.

I wouldn't waste too much time doing real touristy stuff (guided tours etc.) It's a fantastic place just to wander around and everyone I met was absolutely charming. Bed and breakfasts are a great way to save money and certainly a little more romantic than a hotel. Also from my experience pubs have the best food with great, fresh beef and fish and of course every type of potato imaginable.

I also highly suggest finding a traditional session to sit in on, most pubs I went to had bands playing at some point Thursday thru Saturday nights. Any local should be able to tell you where to catch a good one.

Oh yeah- make sure you bring a camera, almost every thing you see looks like it could be a post card.

I might convince my dad to let me borrow his Canon SLR, although I'm so afraid that it'll get lost in the process (it's crazy expensive). I wasn't planning on doing any guided tours, if for nothing other than the fact that it'll cost more money; something I'll be pretty tight on in the first place as my fiancee and I have to pay for the entire wedding ourselves [surrender]. We're definitely going to go to pubs, probably every night if it's possible as that's just a staple of the country in my mind [thumbup]. Do you all think I should fly straight in to the country or should I fly in just outside and take a ferry over? I'll explore the financial options there, but it seems like more interesting scenery if I do it that way.

I flew straight into Shannon, but my trip was paid for by work so I don't know which would be less expensive. I used a little Canon 35mm point and shoot while I was there (pre-digicam days unfortunately) but got some great pics regardless, if nothing more get a disposable, the scenery really is incredible.

Exploring castles, abbeys and grave yards was a blast too. They are all over the place and it was real cool thinking how far back these things went compared to anything we have in the states. I think you'll have a great time no matter what you do if you make it over, sounds like a great way to start a marriage.

Thanks for all your help, I'll definitely use it for sure. I agree though, it seems like the best thing to do that I can think of and the fact that our bloodlines run back to there at some point at least gives it some sort of historical significance anyway.
