A sad thing indeed.

WTF, some of those sums are really high. I bet they could live with half of the food comfortably. Our family is 4 adults strong and our max spending on food per week is around 150 Euros. And Finland isn't exactly the cheapest country in the world...

Some of those families probably grow their own vegetables/fruits/etc, makes it a lot cheaper. No middlemen/long transport forcing prices to increase. But it's still sad.

For the most part, you can't grow everything, and like my family back in the Philippines, you grow one crop, then sell it on a margin for whatever you don't eat yourself. (Unless you're growing tobacco.)

It's amazing just how much food you can really buy with a little money. Remember that everything is not comparative; foods that are grown locally are a lot cheaper than the imported stuff. I can buy the same amount of food for half the cost back home.

a same amount of US dollar doesn't buy you the same amount of food in different part of the world neither.

£155 for a family of 4?!

My gf and I spend about £40 max a week. Even if you double that it's only £80... they must be shopping in Harrods or something...

Edit: we don't just buy the bare necessities either... I have an (un)healthy appetite for Haagen Daz and Parma ham.

Yeah, also depends where you live.

The African family is obviously the poorest but a little over a dollars probably gets you more than what 50 dollars would get you in most other places.

With 20 bucks the African family would eat like kings.

Can't really compare because of location. $500 was, IMHO, too much for what they got if I go by local prices. $30 at a local meat market got me enough 1lb strips for myself and my fiancee to eat steak for dinner every day. And this was top quality meat. Yum. Walmart is more expensive when it comes to quality meats when compared to small rural markets.

to be fair i could never see my family living on £80 for a week for food ...in fact we just spent £80 on saturday (although there was a about £20 worth of booze in that)

I'll assume the total includes drink aswell, the guy from the $500 family looks like he enjoys a good cherry ...or he's an alcoholic

bit of a sweeping generalisation really and I wouldn't take it too seriously. I don't spend anywhere as near, nor do I eat as much cr*p as the brits they surveyed.

Don't know about anyone else, but those Pig's knuckles with carrots, celery and parsnips are sounding pretty damn good!

Stupid americans... How can they think that there are only 14 countries (and that they are so important, that they need to be on the list twice)?

I like the German family because they had a lot of beer. And the Kuwaiti family because they didn't have any soda and their kitchen looked really nice.

I wouldn't want to eat at any of the American or UK homes, too much processed junk food.
