Default Best car for around $4000-6000? (Used/US)
My tranny just got pwned and I found out it will cost $3000 to fix so I decided I'm going to get a new car... well by new I mean used... and $4000-6000 dollars. Must have a CD player and be decent looking =P.

For that money you can get a very nice older model ES series or an Integra or even an older S Class.

If I had that kind of money, these are the kind of cars that I would debate

-Buick Regal or a Pontiac Grand Prix
Fairly low mileage (usually just under or over 100,000 miles)
3.8L V6 Supercharged 240hp / 280ft.-lbs of torque

-VW Golf / Jetta TDI (Diesel) 45mpg average, maybe a little higher

-Chevy K-5 Blazer / Dodge Ramcharger

Buick/Pontiac, A nice extremely comfy car, ok mileage (20mpg), smooth tranny, and a really awesome sleeper car. Get to own some unsuspecting people in. Plus it isn't that hard to get it pushing 300+hp, but it is a bit expensive. Downside is that it is an auto, but it is supposed to be a kicka$$ tranny though.

VW, can't beat the mileage. Freaking AWESOME. Plus diesel is always cheaper. Downside is that it has no power. I am sure you can mod it to hell and back though.

Chevy/Dodge, it will take you anywhere on gravel or in the mud. Powerful V8, awesome looking, high up, can rip through any terrain. Downside is 14mpg doesn't look nice at the pump. Done it before and I am not sure if I want to do it again.

Buy a Civic and never pay for a repair again. I'm sure it will fit your tastes. [rofl]

I have the Chevy Impala with the 3.8L V6 (non-supercharged). The tranny is ok for a four-speed auto, but you really have to rev it to expose the power. It gets 30mpg on the highway, so I don't complain about that. Why don't you include the Impala SS with the Regal and Grand Prix? They're all W-body cars with the same engines and the same transmissions afaik.

Nice thread I am looking also for a new car for the same amount of money about $5000 to replace my POS 1997 Ford Escort

I need some suggestions too

I was looking for the 2002-2003 Mitsubishi Galant...seems to fit nicely in the price range with low mileage and good looking car too

The Impala SS has a 5.7L engine, which if someone is looking for a relatively cheap car, I doubt they'll want to spend a lot on gas.

Yeah, the '94-'96 versions. The '00-'05 versions have the supercharged 3.8L Series II V6, and the '06-present models have a 5.3L V8.

Keep up with the times!

Yeah, we have a La Sabre that has the 3.8L V6. Good car, and it can get up to speed pretty quick for what it is. The Impala SS are 2000+, so they are a bit out of the price range. I would rather get a newer Impala SS or Grand Prix GTP with the 3.8L Supercharged, just that they are closer to the $10k price range compared to a Supercharged 3.8L Series two from 96 to 99. You can find some for as low as $3,000 in really good shape.

Also, the tranny in the Supercharged 3.8L is a heavy duty version that is used for that motor and other V8 motors. The tranny is able to handle the extra torque a lot better, and can handle modification to the car without braking.

Thats the 3rd generation Impala. The 4th generation has the 3.8L V6 in it.

I have a friend with that generation Galant and they are very nice cars. She hasn't complained about it once and loves it to death. She is also one of those people were if something goes wrong you get ride of it and never buy from that company again for as long as you live.
If I were in the market for a Galant, I would try to find one (96-06) with the 2.5L V6 Twin-Turbo. Can't beat 280hp / 268ft.-lbs of torque. [thumbup]

My self, I have also be eye balling the Mazda Millenia S. It has a Miller Cycle 2.3L Supercharged V6. 210hp / 210ft.-lbs torque. It was on the Wards 10 best engine list for 3 years. It has 40hp more then the 2.5L V6 and it have better rated fuel economy also which is pretty neat. The Miller Cycle is supposed to a bit better efficiency compared to all the other motors that are out there even when under forced air induction. Plus you should be able to get quiet a bit more power out of it too.

EPA Ratings
Old = 20/28
New = 17/25
The 2.5L has 1mpg less on the hwy miles on both old and new.
