Default Need help, I need a Domain name ?!
O.k here´s the deal,
I have a website, which i´d like to change it´s URL.
After contacting my host i get this

Yes- it's possible to have your main domain changed. But I could see that the new domain
**********.com hasn't been registered yet. You may need to contact a domain name registrar and get it registered with the following name servers

*********************************
*********************************
********************************* (IP´s)
After then telling them i´m rather clueless on exactly what to do, the email me this

Hi Daniel,

Just to clarify again - We're holding your Hosting account and this means that we can set the main domain for your hosting account to whatever domain name that you wish. But the domain name should be a registered one with name server records in the WHOIS registry pointing to our name servers, so whenever your domain name is accessed it will get pointed to the namservers and then to your account on our sever respectively. The domain name registrations are carried on by various domain name registrars like GoDaddy and you need to contact one of them to get your domain name registered.
So, what exactly should i do ?
Does anybody know where i can get a new URL hosted ?
possibly for free ?

Basically some web hosts offer hosting as well as domain name registering but I'm assuming yours doesn't hence why they are asking you to register elsewhere first. So you need to goto somewhere like:

http://www.godaddy.com

Register your domain name. Then get them (ie. godaddy) to update your name servers with the ones your host provided. This is usually very simple as when you register a domain it will be tied into your account at the site (e.g godaddy again) and you can just put in a support ticket to change the nameservers.

They are pretty cheap but no the only time you would get a 'free' domain is if was bundled in with your hosting package, which it isn't.

edit: if it was free you could just register hundreds of thousands of names and then sell them to people who wanted the names ;p

Godaddy is like $8 a year depending what kind of domain you get. A .info or .tv is like $3 a year IIRC. So, it's very cheap to buy a domain.

+1 for godaddy

I have about 8 or so domains through them, and one website hosted with them. Great value, and their customer service is friendly.

Go to www.namecheap.com and register a domain name with them. Then just update the nameservers in your hosting account and presto!

Yeah great, so is there any way to do this without owning a Creditcard ?
I should mention that having a Creditcard (like Mastercard or Visa) is still rather uncommon here in Germany.
Hmm is anybody willing to transfer the ~8 $ and i´d Paypal them the money or something ?

i'll do it ya cheap skate. Drop me a mail eck@flamingeck.com with details of the domain, choice of registra and the name servers of the hosting and i'll create it. Failing that I'll register it and you can do the monkey work.

If you want to keep it in your name then www.asmallorange.com are a great hosting company, and i'm sure they'll be able to register your domain. I pay something like £2 a month via paypal.
