Hovered my helicopter upside down. Video.

Hehe. I finally dared to hover my helicopter inverted. At first I only dared do it for a couple of seconds but as I got comfortable with it I realized it's not difficult so I can hover inverted for as long as I want now. I still don't dare take it down low though. Babysteps.

Here's a video of a short flight where I flip it around and hover a little. The tail servo is a little slow so it tosses the tail out occasionally when I'm doing quick stuff. I have ordered a better servo: www.enrarot.net/videos/eco8/eco10.wmv

Nice vid - now some practice t be able to fly like that guy you posted a video from a few days ago.http://discussworldissues.com/forums...s/excited1.gif

How hard would you say it is to fly an RC chopper? I want to get one of those or a plane for myself, but I don't want to put in 40 flying hours just to get the thing to lift off the ground.

gariharrr 04-24-2007 05:02 AM

Very hard! It's twice as hard as flying planes. :) The learning curve is very steep for a beginner, and it's difficult to muster up the guts to try new stuff, but because it's challenging it doesn't get boring.

Impressive, you seem to be able to maneuver that thing with great precision. How much does an RC helo like that run including the controller?

Also I'm curious, have you ever tried a wireless camera to mount on it and control it through a monitor?

It costs ~$2000 for a complete heli setup like this. This is a fairly cheap model but I have high quality electronics in it. Bought the basic heli frame from www.fxaeromodels.com

WOW, $2000 huh? Wouldn't be a fun time crashing one of those [shocked].

Could someone explain how you can fly with it upside down?http://discussworldissues.com/forums...ies/blush1.gif

I thought the rotor pushes the air downwards?http://discussworldissues.com/forums...es/unsure1.gif

That's what I was wondering http://discussworldissues.com/forums.../confused1.gif

ehm, make them turn the other way?http://discussworldissues.com/forums...es/tongue1.gif

Or flip the orientation of the blades http://discussworldissues.com/forums...ies/smile1.gif by the time the blades stopped and got up to full speed in the other direction I would have guessed the chopper would be in bits http://discussworldissues.com/forums...ies/laugh1.gif I guess with RC choppers having such a low weight the centre of gravity being higher doesn't affect it as much as in real helicopters.

I'll be receiveing my Belt-CP in a few days.

CP helicopter, which tilt the blade, can tilt the blade the way that the wind blows upward. That's why you can fly inverted.

For more, what can be done, check this video.

That guy has some skill. I think the inverts and twisting just before 3 mins in the vid is the best bit. That helo sure had some power.

Wow, that's more impressive than the super vid posted before by tahust

gariharrr 04-26-2007 02:44 AM

Then you need to take another look at the video I posted before.http://discussworldissues.com/forums...lies/wink1.gif

I'm amazed that people actually believe the rotor spins the other way round to fly inverted. [thumbup]

The RPM is constant. The blade pitch is variable. I have ~12° positive and negative collective pitch on my heli the way it's set up now and the blade profile is symmetrical. Flying inverted isn't much different form flying upright. The rotor disc is an incredibly stable gyro.

Full size helicopters can't fly inverted because they don't have the negative pitch range, the rotor system wasn't made for strong negative loads, the engines and other systems usually can't handle prolonged negative G, and the blades aren't symmetrical. full size helicopters are utility aircraft, not thoroughbred aerobatic machines like RC helicopters are.

Although that would be cool! [thumbup]
