as i'm getting older i'm readdressing my personal balance when it comes to form vs. function and therefore, between the two, i would opt for the clarion because no doubt either will sound more than fine (especially since if you are spending that much on a head unit i assume you are using external amplification anyway?)

retro is nice, but you don't have to agree.
They do have a great sound in them and may be expensive, but you do get something nice for the money with good sound quality. It was a suggestion on my end together with Alpine that 3dfx has recommended to you, which has all the bells and whistles on them you like. ![]() (PS I myself have Alpine as well) |

Before I can anwer the question of which would be best for you, I need to know what you ultimately plan to do with your system.
If you're just going to use the head unit's built in amp to power 2 or 4 speakers and that's the extent of your system, then either unit will do fine, pick whichever one has the features you like best. Now if you're going to have a more elaborate system at some point, with a subwoofer system, and component mids & highs powered by their own separate amp, then I'd get the Pioneer. It has 3 sets of 4v outputs and a built-in crossover for setting the frequencies of each output, so future expansion would be very easy. In contrast, the Clarion unit only has 2 preamp outputs, which would be inferior compared to the Pioneer in this scenario. Edit: Based on several posts in this thread, it would appear most people want the nicest face and either aren't aware of what's behind it, or don't care. |

I've read lots of good things about Clarion before and it looks awesome, so I'd maybe go with the Clarion. But, I do not know the capabilities of each, so I can't really say which one I'd go for.
