Help finding good speakers

My father has some really old speakers. I was looking to get him something a little better. They are for a stereo system in our family room. I'm clueless as to what to get, I would like to stay under the $200.

best thing to do is go into a store and listen to them. BOSE is total hype, just listen to the blah blah its a name like ADIDAS, fits like any other shoe ya aint gonna run faster and BOSE doesnt sound better. Dont buy the namehttp://discussworldissues.com/forums...lies/wink1.gif

I suggest save up a little more money and get something like Klipsch ifi or something. The stores here in NY wont have anything good, so don't even waste your time, plus the speakers will be overpriced.

In that price range I highly recommend Infinity.

There's a chance that those speakers are better than anything you can buy for 200 bucks today.http://discussworldissues.com/forums...lies/wink1.gif

Was thinking the same thing.
Another alternative is to have a look around for a good second hand set - must be a few people upgrading from decent to higher end gear.

Third that. He might have fantastic speakers- how about your tell us what he has, along with what receiver/amp he uses, so we can be more helpful.

Forgot - to OP, it's a great thought and we're not having a go at you, just looking at the options.

That is what I was thinking in the first place. This is one of the reasons why I would ask before I decided for sure.

What he currently has are:
Optimus STA 3190
Sony SS U45 They look like these

Those speakers look similar to my dad's old Schneiders except my they have bigger woofers. And they are pretty good[thumbup] so I'm guessing those aren't too bad either.[yes]

masteryxisman 08-05-2007 01:31 AM

OP,
the speakers look decent (you would need to spend probably a few hundred dollars (more than what you want to spend) to get the same thing), and the specs on the receiver aren't bad: http://support.radioshack.com/suppor.../doc9/9684.htm

I would suggest you get it properly configured and have him spend the money on some new music!

OP, a few questions here. Can you tell us about the equipment? working order and such or its overall condition? and 2 what kinda stuff does your dad listen to? music wise. some speakers are good for a few types of music, and some are decent for all. and how loud does he use it?

For 200.00 you will not find much.

AND PEOPLE, what I am about to recommend - I HAVE HAD A SET.
(sorry for the yelling, It's just I hate when people say, oh those are garbage - WHEN, they have not heard them, have not owned them, and have never even seen a set of them in person)
I have had a lot of sets of speakers.
Currently, I have a 1500.00 set of speakers and a HSU Sub, that lone cost 900.00 (at the time)
The sub, you can now get for 600.00
(as well a Pioneer Elite, a 96" screen (and a 120"), front projetion, etc...)
(see pics)

For, OP, I have had a set of these. AND FOR THE PRICE. You will not do any better.

They do image well.

Anyway, these are decent (built very well) for the $ - http://www.fluance.com/fluanceavhtb.html

EDIT:: I almost always take apart all my equipment, to see how well it is built.
I'll see if I can find the Fluance set of pics for you.. Also, I have about 7 subwoofers, that I have taken apart (to check build)
So if you need a sub recommendation, I can send some pics of those as well.

ehh i like bose btw i wont buy em new, but on the second hand market a decent set of 901's are nice. not worth the new price but ehh, anyhoo, im using denon now. the bose are goin into my media room b4 long

gamblingstats 08-05-2007 02:48 AM

I agree with what many others have said here if you want something good for $200 I suggest you go for something second hand. Something mid range like Mission 773e maybe. Or you could always let him stick with the speakers he's got and get him a nice pair of Headphones.

SpeavaJap 09-05-2007 01:00 AM

Thanks for all the help, I still have a while to think of something else to get him.
