Intern as a SQL Server Administrator
 

I'm working on finishing my bachelor's degree this year in management of information systems, and would like to be a SQL Server adminstrator, but I have basic knowledge of the SQL language, but I am fairly familair with the SQL Server environment. Most of the positions I am finding require 4-6 years experience as an SQL server admin and knowledge of peoplesoft and Crystal Reports. Do you think most companies do internships in these types of areas or at least have some training. I learned some of this in college, but its pretty limited. Is it a good idea to get MSCE certified in SQL Server before trying to get into this? How do people get into this stuff, cause all I am finding is DBA jobs that want 4-6 years experience and a high level of knowlege of the SQL language. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

I've just been offered training to be a DBA by our company... a little daunting as I really have no idea what I'm in for. http://discussworldissues.com/forums...ies/wacko1.gif

However I guess it will look good an a resume, and since it will cut down on the number of employees needed I hope this added skill will get me a pay rise.

I don't think that you will find many if any companies will be willing to set someone loose on their SQL server without some form of specialised training (college education ain't enough) or experience. Without working your way up I really don't think it's possible, but hey I guess it depends how desperate people are for a DBA.

So the best way to become a DBA is to start in some other IT position in the company and work into that? I think maybe I should get MSCE certification in SQL Server too, but maybe not.
