I barely ever shop at CompUSA because of there high prices on old hardware. But it is one of the only places left that you can actually go into a store and buy computer parts besides BestBuy which is even worse in price and selection. CompUSA is just one of those last resort places when you need it right away. So it would be a shame to see them close down completely.

you need to move to a better area... i can go to one of many Fry's electronics... and if i become desperate... i got microcenter to fall back on... JK

in all seriousness, it must really suck to be a computer enthusiast in small town america with little options in the need now market.

Meh, I've always found the independent PC shops treat me better and usually actually know what they're talking about. I do visit CompUSA for the occasional game purchase, CPU fan or cheap DVD drives and such.

You must be lucky then. All the local shops around my area sell last years hardware at today's prices...

I have to drive 2 hours if I want an electronics store. There are a few within 20 minutes, but then I have to drive to another country (Canada) and that can sometimes take upwards of two hours. Getting back into the US can be a pain in the ass sometimes (long lines, stupid ass questions from the border patrol).

I'm just in awe anytime I walk into a Best Buy [rofl]. I usually see my electronics on a webpage, not in person.

Wow, they must not have made a very big deal about it even though they closed stores in so many different locations. I had a CompUSA about 10 mins away from me, but I just checked that store locator and apparently it doesn't exist anymore. I never would have known if I didn't see this thread. Oh well, it's not that big of a deal. There are much better PC/Electronics stores around my area anyway[yes].
Wow is right, suddenly they closed all the San Diego stores, as I see the closest are now Bakersfield and Santa Barbera. Wish there had been a closing sale advertised, but I didn't see anything.

Default CompUSA closing 130 stores!
Article here.

I never buy anything from stores like this anyway, always order online. Circuit City is also closing some stores down.

Not a big surprise. In my experience they carry old technology at cutting edge prices.

We stopped in there to look for something the other day and I saw the 22 in monitor I have been considering at almost $100 more than I can get it online.

Its also usually cheaper to pay shipping than to drive there and pick something up.

You might get lucky and snag a tech guy with half a brain but for the most part their staff is totally clueless.

The only real thing I stop in there for is to pick up the occasional game or to view something physically that I am getting ready to order online.

Looks like they are closing all their stores in the Minneapolis area. Not a big disappointment but I usually went there for stuff like printer cartridges, paper, etc. Their Compusa brand products sometimes had pretty good deals.

The only thing I've found CompUSA to be good for is blank CD's, and the TAPS program on graphics cards. Although the TAPS program is easily abused there so I'm sure that's one of the reasons they aren't doing so hot. That and most people by now have figured out that it's way cheaper to just buy hardware online.

I found that Blank DVDs and CDs are cheaper at Sam's Club or Costco.

kinda saw this comming...Not saying BestBuy is much better, but atleast our stuff on sale is always a instant rebate, so its pretty common to see a 22'' lcd for 300$, or a 2gb flash drive for 30$, 250gb hdd for 90$ etc...we actually get some good deals competitive to newegg and online stuff...compusa will never actually go out of business coz there is always that niche in the market where someone needs a cpu cooler, mobo something specific that they need, that will go there without looking around...

Wow they've closed like everystore within 30 miles of here. You'd think business would be good near the nation's capitol.

I am buying a new psu and I did a bit of price checking.
Compusa offers a Antec TruePower Trio 650 Power Supply for $169. I can drive 10 minutes and get the same one at Microcenter for $119.

Hmmm...what should I do?

Seriously..with that kind of pricing what did they expect?
