tansmission for under 1000$ ?
 

well, my jeeps transmission blew, just stoped shifting, now I have 1 and 2nd gear, which can go upto about 45mph....anyhow, is it possible to get a new/used transmission and have it installed for under 1000$ ? its a 1996 jeep grand cherokee v8 4 wheel drive...cos if not than I'll just get another car...It was a gas guzler anyhow...just did school which is about 6miles away, to home and then to work which is 1.5 miles away...and still needed 50$ a week in gas...

Man thats asking alot. Let me see what I can find out for you. I know a bunch of people that are into jeeps. I know 1 guy thats a jeep tech at a local dealer and my uncle just retired from Montrose jeep eagle. He was the lead tech for years there so let me see what I can find out for you.

yeah I know, thanks for trying, I know its alot to ask for, specially since the part itself new is probably like 700-800$ atleast...my idea was to get a used one from a junkyard for a couple hundread...and then that would leave me with 500-700 for installation charges...but I dont know....btw do you know Ray from racers den ? he's a buddy of mine...he drives a cobra 04 I think, got some stuff done to it. I think hes pushing like 500-550hp...

dude new your looking at like 2-3000$, used a couple hundred, a used one for my car is like $400 and I know somone its 8 hours labour and he only charges 25$ an hour so only 200 labour no tax, my sugestion would be to find somone that will do install it for you

[rofl] Cuban RAY! Yeah I know Ray fairly well. Not real close friends with him but we talk when ever we run across each other. His crobra is a black 04 on CCW wheels. As far as I know he doesnt have alot of mods but I could be wrong. I think he has a pully for the blower and a tune. Other than that im not sure.


EDIT: And Stealth is right. A new trans from jeep would probably be around $2,000 plus labor to install. If I had access to a lift I would offer to do it for you but I dont anymore which sucks. Are you sure the trans is bad? Have you ever felt it slip? There are other minor things can make a trans not shift into all the gears correctly. Normaly when a trans goes bad it does it over a period of time instead of just suddenly going out.

I would say stealth is right on the money for new install. I just did a jeep Wranglar but it was a manual tranny. that tranny alone was $1100 just for the transmision so an automatic would cost a bit more. Not sure about your area but here Jeep drivetrains in a scrap yard are rare and the ones that have one well the prices they want makes the price of a new one look good.

I would look around your area for prices on getting it rebuilt. Rebuild kits are ALOT cheaper and if you find a good shop the rebuild might only cost you $1000-1200. Plus pending on the shop you should get a some type of warrenty on it.

yeah I guess I wont be able to make it...maybe I should just look at something new...anyhow I noticed it slipping a couple of days ago...not all the time, but a couple times a day, then today, I'm listening to music, and of course cant hear the engine, but for look and the dash, and notice I'm cruising @ 45mph, which normally would be at around 1500rpm, and it was @ 3k....so right now something was wrong, thought it was just coz the car didnt warm up completly or something, later on on the way back from school, its even worse, doesnt even go into 2nd gear, unless I manually do it...if I leave it in D, only ge 1st gear, If I go thru 1 and 2, then atleast I get 2 gears...which means I can do around 40-50 miles per hour...enough to get around...but still...need to etheir get fixed, or get something...btw do you think any dealer would give me anything for my jeep ? like even 500$ ? its a 1996 w/ 193510 miles on it...idealy I'd get like 2k for it....but now with this problem, no one would probably even buy it...

try pulling the engine codes. a co-worker of mine had a similar problem with a dodge dakota with the 5.2. turned out to be a shift solenoid on the side of transmission. it was a fairly inexpensive part. 1996 should be obd2.

Hmmmm honestly I dont know. I know the guys on racersden love jeeps for offroading so maybe post it for sale on there. Actually I would have to post it for you because you need a minimum of like 50 posts to get in that section. I bet you might be able to get $1,500 for it if you sell it outright but it might take you a couple weeks to sell.

This is what I was thinking also but I dont know a whole lot about jeep. If its not throwing a service light then it probably isnt throwing any codes but it may be worth it to have that checked.

"a valvebody alone is going to be over a thousand installed, i know they are like 900 at my cost, i just priced one for one of my sidejobs. it could be a governor pressure sensor and solenoid problem, alot of them have that...but in jeeps that old i don't know. any idea what trans is in it? its chrysler either way, but theres a few trans' options. all jeep trans are junk as **** cept in xj's."

ok, thanks for trying, I have to look for a used one anyway, just so my parents dont say I didnt try....but I'm pretty sure it cant be done, so I'll end up selling it...anyhow I'll pm ya in a few days. Thanks for trying prostreetcamaro.

I tried to respond last night, but my internet decided to go dead right when I hit the reply button. after cross referencing a few sites I found out that it should have a 44re electronicly controlled 4speed auto. It's worth a shot to check out.

I don't know about Jeeps, but I do know that a full on 700r4 race rebuild with a 9.5" vigilante TC built to handle 600hp+ only costs about $1800 here. If you want a stock rebuild you can get by with considerably less money. About $800 for a rebuild transmission.

I say find a local shop that street racers recommend. If you can't find anything local then look below and talk to Jimmy.

Or contact these people and see if they do transmissions for your jeep. They are reputable and I've never even HEARD a bad word about their work and product. nothing but praise.
