Tempted to get a 8 core Mac Pro now, although I probably shouldn't since the money will come out of my car fund.

I don't understand what's so impressive about that, he modelled a basic city and is running some fluid dynamics on it, while it is a testament to how advanced open-source tools have become, it's really nothing more than the guy playing around with blender.

please do, if it's not too much trouble. But you still have to get across the initial hurdle of getting hold of a copy yourself

deathcarrot, while shameless self-promotion was also part of the goal[oops] , my main goal was to showcase what can be done on an entry level pc with open source software these days.

Aaah, that was your stuff? [shocked] Sorry, I thought you just randomly found something on youtube and decided to post it (I am drunk, but I know that's not really an excuse).. I hope you didn't take my rather brash criticism too personally [no] Advocates of the open-source movement such as yourself are a true asset to the community.. Now when can we see it lit and textured?

Feel free to link the first one to other sites. I'm not paying for it, and the free trials going to expire soon anyway. The second one, please keep FM only. I'll remove it if any of you start posting it elsewhere.

don't worry about it, i know i can do better . sometimes I am just lazy, so i throw together something in 5 minutes and then let the computer spend the next 100 hours rendering. I just upgraded to a C2D 3.2Ghz with 2GB of RAM running on 64bit linux, so i might attempt to finish the scene.

yup, about 50 hours to simulate the water and store the 10GB geometry to HDD, and another 50 hours to render to the avi.

Holy crap just for that scene?!

God knows how long it took the team at Square to produce FF: Spirits Within. [shocked]

Quite a while In big name commercial CG films, single frames can take several hours to render, and that's with render farms with hundreds of high end clients (Pixar uses >1000 Xeons in their farm).

Wow thats amazing

One thing i don't get is whether the water is made out of small particles with some blending technique or it is really a fluid with surface tension calculations?

edit: i suspect the latter, when you play it in slowmo you can see the water droplets being adhered to the wave when the wave comes over, and you can see big water splashes around the buildings. room for improvement (the scale for example is way off or are they supposed to be small blocks?), but still very impressive
