Default Smell of Gas in NYC
Can you smell it?

http://www.cnn.com/

I could smell it all the way from West 4th on the F to the Rockefella building. They've cut off the outside venting to this building (6th Av at 50th st).

Is this gas as in butane or gas as in petrol?

Was first reported at 9am. Your mayor was just on for a press conference. They still don't know where it is coming from.

Apparently you can smell it in most of Manhattan and in Jersey city as well. [shocked]

To me it smelled like natural gas, like what comes off your stove.

Gas company can't find a drop in pressure anywhere either.

Thanks for your input - it's hardly posting CNN headlines for a laugh when I am sitting in the middle of Manhattan.

Was first reported at 9am. Your mayor was just on for a press conference. They still don't know where it is coming from.

Yeah I can in in the subway about 9. Bloomberg doesn't know any more than anyone else. What's odd is that it covers such a huge area and it is still lingering about.

Maybe someone spilt a cannister of Methanethiol or something (you know, the stuff they add to butane to give it a warning smell), or some sulphur. I doubt it's anything sinister, due to the fact that you can actually smell it.

It's not a nerve gas so nothing to worry about. However, i would be careful with matches and lighters if i were you.

Well it's going away now, perhaps we'll never know

That's the theory now.

Department of Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke said there was no indication of terrorism and no credible intelligence to suggest any imminent threat to the city. He said the agency is closely monitoring the situation. Maybe the terrorists can't get any explosive so they all got together and tried to light a group fart.

Edit: Guess someone had to lower the tone.
