Default Car ideas? (UK)
Well seeing my car is very likely to be written off now thanks to whiplash damage, i'm going to need some ideas on what to get when it's gone - and i'm struggling.

My budget is going to be around £2000 providing I can get the money I need from my car. What kind of cars should I be looking at? I only prefer to buy cars around the 1998 year mark (if possible) with it below 70k miles. The bigger (in terms of size), the better. Ideas?

...or should I just save for something a bit more decent?

If i needed a large card for cheap around that age id prob go for somthing pretty generic like a mondeo or vectra, prehaps ex fleet as they should have decent service history

Totally depends wether you are looking for somthing fun or somthing functional really.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that a saloon car isn't really ideal. [surrender] I was thinking the size like an Astra as probably the maximum. I could live with a smaller hatchback, but providing it isn't horribly noisy on a motorway like my current car is.

hmm, a 306 dturbo will put a smile on your face , you can get a good one for 1500, so for 2 grand you shouldnt have a problem finding an awsome condition one.

No wait, a Seat Ibiza, yes?

While I personally think Seat's are good cars due to the engineering put into them, there's something I don't quite like about Seat cars for some reason.

Ok, I'll feel like a bit of an idiot for saying this, but what about a VW Polo (94-00 model)? These are alot more common than the Ibiza and if i'm honest, I somewhat prefer the exterior styling on the older Polo compared to the older Ibiza.

saxo's are the way forward [thumbup]

you could get a vtr for £2k and it wouldnt be a killer to insure. or maybe it would.... they're nippy and fun anyway.

polo's are good, as you say more around so easier to find. can't say i agree on the styling front ok cars are very similar, but the ibiza looks a lot better at the back and the front is the same basically but the ibiza has a 30mm longer front axle

saxo's just attract unwanted attention imo, and i would prefer something like a polo which i would feel safer in as well

Well I guess we all have different tastes. However that doesn't go without saying I like the look of the modern Seat alot more than it once was.

I appreciate the suggestion for a Saxo, but IMO it's not really what i'm looking for.

To be honest, it's rather sad i'm gonna have to see my Clio written off. Although it wasn't exactly an easy car to drive (heavy steering, very heavy clutch and a gearbox which is stiff as nails), it was definately alot of fun to drive. I don't know what it is about French hatchbacks that makes them fun to drive.

The insurance group for a VTS is unbelievable. It's pretty much the equivalent of some posh German vehicle. Shame really.

Put the money as a deposit down on a NEW car. You will be able to get free insurance for the first year, plus depending on the company up to 5 years warranty.

To be honest i'd love to, but I've got University next year providing I get the grades I need.

I'd probably end up being rejected for a finance loan as well since i'm only a student.

You would be fine with finance, especially if you got a part time job up there. Secondly a lot of places offer 0% finance.

An example:

£5000 car
£2000 deposit
0% finance
£3000 / 3 years / 12 months = £83 per month over 3 years.

A half decent part time job would pay around £40 - £60 per week. So you would onlly need about a week and half wages, with money to spare.
