Network Problems
Trying to set up a small network for my home. I ran "set up a home or small office network" on both of my computers but they still can't talk to each other.
I have both computers running through a router and that is connected to my modem - SBC Yahoo DSL. They both can get on the internet fine but there is something I am not doing to allow them to share files, etc. Help? |
can they ping each other? also make sure they are in the same workgroup for ease of sharing
|
they can't ping each other but they are using the same damn router. Not sure what is up.

Windows firewall? File and print sharing?
|
When I click on VIEW Workgroup Computers on comp A - I see both computers.
When I do the same on comp B - I only see that computer. Yes, they are sharing printing but that isn't working now either. I turned off both firewalls in windows. |
I just tried re-pinging the computers and they could do it.
packets sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 . |

You wouldn't happen to be running ZoneAlarm on either one would you? I had a problem just like yours where only 1 machine could view the others on the network, all the others could only see themselves. So i turned off ZoneAlarm and all the problems went away.

We had similar problems in Iraq when I was hooking up 40 some odd computers to a network for internet. we found the ones refusing to communicate right were the ones running Symantic Norton Firewalls.

If they can ping each other you can try typing \\192.168.0.2/sharedfiles or whatever ip in a folder's address bar. If you can see the shared files, it means it's a problem with........ something. I used to know what, but it's 8:46 am, sorry.

Need more info.
Do you get any error messages? Does your user account have permissions to access the network share? Do you have any network shares? |
The Error Message is:
"Printer properties cannot be displayed. The print spooler service is not running." I have been able to use this printer for over a year and I didn't change a thing - now I get this error message. Not sure what a Network share is exactly. |
Doesnt XP Home have half of its networking features removed?
