Can there be a means to setup as a modem - to connect to my notebook? an IPHONE?

I'm wanting to get an iphone. It is only wanted by me if i may use my aircard to be replaced by it. can the iphone act be made by me as a wi-fi modem?? without fretting about bricking or jailbreaking it??
