Default Seems the H1N1 virus may have been a lot more serious than initially thought.
New estimates are 1/4 to a 1/2 million deaths from the swine flu
But what really made me was that the 'normal' flu's apparently have similar mortality rates every year!

DAMNIT, wrong forum! - could someone shift it to GD, please?

Loads, how often do you hear of normal healthy people you know dying of flu? My mother used to work as a carer for the elderly in an old peoples home and (normally winter time) she would come home often deflated and tell me so and so had died, 90% of the time just flu finishing em off unfortunately. I guess other younger people do die from it but they probably have over health issues..

I would be more concerned with the growing ease at which it is possible for almost any bio scientist to mutate much more deadly animal strains of viruses to cross to humans.

This was once a technique that only the best in the field could even possibly attempt which means it was relatively safe because of all the safe guards in place and the tiny number of people that could do it.

But as time progresses and science advances there will come a time where it will be almost trivial for any old "scientist" to piss about with genes and mutate viruses in his garage more or less. This is worrying as we really don't want someone accidentally releasing a mutated mousepox virus (for example) that they have been pissing about with in their home lab in name of "research".

Its bad enough that highly regulated research firms are doing this sort of thing day in day out in the lab. They say it is so they can make vaccines before the virus mutates naturally. But if you ask me its playing with fire.

You are asking for trouble constantly trying to combine smallpox and mousepox among other things in the name of research.

Bio and chemical weapons are just as frightning as nuclear imo.

more so , since bio weapons are invisble and silent.

dont need to weaponise the bird flu - the birds are doing it themselves

Nope. Still not even remotely serious.

I'm more worried about someone hitting me with a car.

The idea of you being hit by a car also weighs heavily on my mind, coincidentally.

I have had it once. I always thought I had flu when I had a bad cold before that. I was put very firmly in my place.

I could actually function for a couple of hours if I took some really strong flu capsules, but generally I just lay in bed sweating my tits off and shivering for five days.

How do you know what I am doing in my garage?
