Default What technologys frighten you?
Due to their potential?

I'm wary of finding dark matter and nano-technology for instance. And I'm a technology buff at a tech-head forum

Surely others have technology they are wary of due to their massive potential?

nothing really.

it is who controls the new tech what worries me most.

True that.

Yeah, that would be quite remarkable yet scary.

The problems that could arise from nanotechnology scare the **** out of me, but at the same time the positive possibilities are endless.

I don't believe there is enough energy for that. Plus people were scared over the first nuclear bomb. They didn't know if that chain reaction wouldcontinue and burn the skies.. They did it and it didn't happen.

I love the LHC! Mostly because it is Euro tech and other countries joined in.

Sex toys...

Anything that doesn't go soft and is either operated by batteries or plugs into the wall is a SERIOUS, REAL threat to all of MANkind! [surrender]

Chopsticks. cant f'ing use em.

seriously the only thing would probably be the proposed neural interfaces for personal computers, like the talk about implanting experiences etc, without actually having done anything,

infections with malware could have a whole new meaning and maybe even screw you up for life it the wrong memories experiences were given to you or forced on you.

thats a valid fear

Couldn't malware also infect nano-technology?

None.

Anything can have massively good/bad potential and I also dislike the concept of fear of the unknowen.

This isn't necessarily a fear of the unknown - we know what kind of repercussions certain technological breakthroughs can have. It isn't the technology itself as others have said that i fear - rather; what comes of it when placed in the wrong hands.

Could we even successfully contain these breakthroughs? Are we certain we have the technology to contain them?

Fear of aliens is fear of the unknown

If I may ask, why? Although there's still plenty of debate about what dark matter fundamentally is, the point that is agreed in all circles is that, if it does exist, dark matter only interacts gravitationally with non-dark matter, so it's effectively 100% 'safe' for us.

And yet all I can think of is how having exoskeleton would be bad ass. [thumbup]

Nanotech on the other hand is some pretty messed up crap. If you proliferate all sorts of nice little things which have the potential to get inside your body then you potentially have a lot more risk of interference with normal body processes. It's good stuff.

True, my diction could use some work.

Yes, the fear of wrong hands is a valid concern. But I don't think it's enough to warrent the unease of the technology itself. I also don't have any problem with containment. Even when producing quarks and other 'strange matter' I can't see the problem of producing then finding that the production itself got to an uncontrollable measure or that containment hasn't been sufficent.

How does it get into your body? Am I touring the nanotech factory when someone drops a vial full of them?

All circles also agree that we don't fully understand what dark matter is. (as you more or less stated) So is it sound to make those assumptions?

And if it turns out to be true and is safe to discover - could we safely and responsibly harness it?

well in this instance I'd be more frightened of your brown hole if you managed to create one in your pants

Yes - the whole concept of dark matter was theorised to explain cosmological observations and for the theories to be valid, they require that dark matter must have certain properties, most nobable being that it very weakly interacts with non-dark matter.

And if it turns out to be true and is safe to discover - could we safely and responsibly harness it? Not really - if dark matter exists and if it does turn out to be mostly made out of what are called WIMPs (weakly interacting massive particles), then by its very nature it can't be made to do anything with the matter we're normally familiar with.
