Default I don't believe it.
On December 11th last year I bought my first new TV ever; a 32" Sharp Aquos (720P). Two months later, I've got this nasty vertical black line that won't go away. It's there on all inputs. I take the TV to the repair shop where it sits for two weeks. Finally they say they've ordered a replacement TV; the same model. I get it, set it up, and life is fine.

...up until 15 minutes ago.

Keep in mind, I just bought an HDPVR 7 days ago, so I'm really loving watching TV, as of late. I flip the channels to Goodfellas on A&E HD, and boom! The line is back! I change channels. It's there. It's on all channels. I try an SD channel and stretch it. It's there. I try my DVD player. It's there. NO!!!!

So my warranty runs out in 10 days. Well, 9 days actually. What should I do? Do the same thing over again and pick up my third Aquos? Two Aquos TVs and two identical problems. What would you do? I'm so depressed.

Go for it. While your warranty is still in effect, i would go ahead and take advantage of the time you have left. While waiting for the next tv, maybe evaluate what components you have hooked up to it and see if maybe one of those could be causing this. Could you hook your dvd or hdpvr up to another tv and see if the same thing happens? Then again, it very well could be a bad few that came off of the assembly line.

Well, since the repair people were able to duplicate the problem with their devices, I think that pretty well proves that it's a problem with the TV(s). Last year I had the problem whether using basic cable through the coax input or the DVD on HDMI. This year the problem exists whether using the same DVD on the same HDMI and with my HDPVR running on the second HDMI input.

I'm no expert, but I can't see my DVD or PVR being able to cause a whole line of pixels to blow on the TV. The line is right where an SD image would end, so it's not visible when watching anything that's 4:3. It's like the border between 4:3 and widescreen seems to burn out or something. I wonder if it has to do with the screen switching between aspect ratios all the time. I don't know.

It must be a bad batch of screens. This is the Aquos LC32D40U, in case anyone knows anything interesting about this model.

Here it is! The exact problem I'm having!

http://consumerist.com/consumer/comp...nty-309695.php

"There's a thin black line on the right side of the screen. It sorta looks like it's not completely hiding the letter boxes when you go to full screen format."

So it is something common to this model. At least now I'm a little more assured that it's not something I'm doing.

I'd fight it all the way. Every TV seems to have a design defect, it's not just a once off manufacture defect.

Demand that the problem be fixed with another model!

Fight hard, that's how I went from the shoddy Z-680 logitechs to the much beter built Z-5500. [yes]

Got a stupid auto-e-mail back from Sharp, but had a good discussion with the retail store I bought it at. They sounded willing to discuss upgrade options if it turns out to be the same problem again. Time to box it up... again.

Keep in mind that when an item under warranty gets repaired, the manufacturer will usually tack on a 3 month warranty from the repair time. This is to safeguard the customer from any problems that occur from the repair.

Return!

If that model is discontinued, which it should be if it has a common and major issue like this and from the age, then they have no choice but to upgrade you since you are still under warranty. Maybe they will even be willing to let you choose a more expensive TV and you just pay the difference, which would be uber cool. Depending on the store you bought it from, these guys can be pretty cool and extremely flexible in what they allow you to do. I know that our CC does this and is extremely flexible to the consumers desires.

If the model is still around and is practically the same one that they end up giving you, you will at least get a model that is newer, a higher revision model and should basically be almost flawless, or at least this major issue fixed.

Though whatever you get, buy new warranty if you can, or at least try to get it extended.

I feel for ya man. I'd be very irate. Whenever I buy expensive electronics I always get the extended/replacement/accidental warranty. I know it costs more but you have the peace of mind in knowing if anything goes wrong you just take it back and get a new one. I bought my girlfriend a laptop at Circuit City for 800 bucks plus software and accessories. The 2 year extended warranty was 200 dollars but they don't care if I bring it back full of sand and sea water. It gets replaced immediately. And in 2 years I can buy more if I want.

Well, it's in their hands now. Just back from dropping it off. I made it explicitly clear, though, that I don't want this TV or a replacement model back. I'm only willing to discuss some form of upgrade. With that in mind, I figure I've got about two weeks to figure out what kind of TV I want.

I'm thinking I'll go a step higher in size and resolution to 37-40" and 1080P. No idea what make and model, though. Suggestions?
