Default Bad memory
Who here has a bad memory for a particular thing (or in general)

For me I really struggle to remember peoples names when they are new to me. For example if someone says so and so called for you and I don't ring them straight back and I don't write it down, I will have to ask later who it was again. Some people you just say a name once and they remember it from then on.

How can I teach myself to have a better memory for such things

If you know the kind of things you are likely to forget, whenever you hear it, repeat it to yourself a few times in your head and make a concious effort to remember. Works for me whenever I can be bothered to do it

If you have a problem with names, when you meet the person ask them to tell you something interesting about themselves or something like that. It will help you remember people by individualizing them from everyone else. Otherwise you can look at the person and think of an animal that they look like or think of a word that begins with their first name that is descriptive of them. Give it a try. [thumbup] I have a great memory but I struggle with names as well.

I can't remember anything. I have no short term memory. I set my keys down, take a pee, then walk off without my keys.

I forgot my fathers birthday two weeks ago. Does that make me a bad person?

Another handy tool is to use mnemonic devices to remember things (associate something with it that will help you remember it). For instance, I kept thinking that our gardener's name was Reynaldo and I could never remember his name, even though I knew that it wasn't actually Reynaldo. So my fiance tells me to think of reuben sandwiches. And that's how I remember that his name is Ruben when I see him LOL.

There are a BUNCH of ways to do this with numbers, names, places, addresses, etc. and when you train yourself to do it on a regular basis it becomes second-hand.

Also, if you want to learn more advanced techniques, look into Kevin Trudeau's Mega Memory course. You should be able to find it used or on ebay for cheap and it helps significantly. And even though I haven't checked out this website, they supposedly use many of the same techniques as Mega Memory - http://www.thememorypage.net/

I've always had a bad memory, especially when it comes to names. Here are some examples.
Only a few other black people where I live and one went to elementary, jr, and high school with me. Everytime I see him, I have to ask his name. This includes last time when I was seeing pirates of the Caribbean with him. I asked who Alex was when they told me he was coming, I asked who he was when we were saving seats for him, I asked what his name was mid movie when he was talking to me. (I know it now)

On more then one occasion-
Me:
Someguy: Hey
Me: hey!...
Someguy: ...you don't remember me do you?
Most of the time they'll try to remind me, which works sometimes.

I know my dad's birthday is somewhere around fathers day, I know my brother's birthday is in either January or February.

Strangely enough I've learned to associate people with they clothes they wear. I don't recommended it, they insist on constantly changing them.
