Adam Yauch, one-third of the pioneering hip-hop group the Beastie Boys, has died at the age of 48, Rolling Stone has learned. Yauch, also known as MCA, had been in treatment for cancer since 2009. The rapper was diagnosed in 2009 after discovering a tumor in his salivary gland.

Yauch sat out the Beastie Boys' induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April, and his treatments delayed the release of the group's most recent album, Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2. The Beastie Boys had not performed live since the summer of 2009, and Yauch's illness prevented the group from appearing in music videos for Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2.

I'm genuinely sad about this. I just got into the Beastie Boys in the last couple of years. Their last album is a masterpiece by the way!

I loved how most of the time it's like they're just mucking around but their massive talent always shines through

It's really too bad. They are one of the few artist that were totally original and stayed that way :(

There are a LOT of original bands/artists out there, you just haven't heard of them because they aren't on the radio.

...and that's probably because they suck.

Some do sure, several stand out.

Which at the very least, is as good a success rate as mainstream music, right?

Also, you had mentioned originality, so I thought it relevant to point out that a lot of original material is ignored in lieu of marketability to teenagers.
