That is funny but I meant in this binding it is cheaper:
http://www.amazon.com/Byzantium-Cent...4024274&sr=1-4 I have both versions and will be putting my cheaper set on sale at Amazon the next few days. I love the Folio Society bindings- I guess I am becoming a book snob. BTW, there is a one volume condensed version as well that is very good: http://www.amazon.com/Short-History-...4024274&sr=1-3 I will be ditching my copy of that one too. |

My favorite books on Byzantium in a great binding: I found " A short history of Byzantium " By the same author you recommended (it's a abridged version of all three books in one for under 14$ on amazon.ca). I might start with that one. |

The Treadgold book is about the most thorough you can find in English in one volume. Also I notice that recently some good volumes on Byzantine diplomacy and methods of warfare have appeared. These were quite unique to Byzantine cultural standards and is what led to the charges of 'Byzantine perfidy' etc from the west. Basically though this stemmed from the aim of Byzantine diplomacy which was to avoid a fight if possible, which was seen as cowardly in the west.
Of course though no other empire lasted for so long- over 1000 years. In Christ -Fr Raphael |

Lost to the West: The Forgotten Byzantine Empire that Rescued Western Civilization is one of my favorite books. For only being around 350 pages it gives a good introduction to the history of the Empire. Aaron |

Thanks John "Lost to the West: The Forgotten Byzantine Empire that Rescued Western Civilization " seems like a good read I found it on Amazon.ca and might order it. How do you find the author's view of the Orthodox Church, is he Orthodox? |
