Nice workaround. It's a pity the carriers/networks have so much control on the thing tho.

Native hotspot FTW!

A vast majority of phones in the US, including the Galaxy Nexus, have carrier provisioning so you have to pay extra.

I am running a custom ROM with that stripped out fortunately but it is good to see that Verizon isn't charing extra for making your iPad LTE a hotspot.

That is one of the advantages to the GSM Nexus I believe. Zero carrier interference with tethering working in the U.S on T-Mobile/AT&T

When my wife had the iPhone 4, she would have had to pay another fee to enable the hotpsot (she gets 750MB in her plan). Same sim in my Galaxy S II, and the hotspot feature works without extra payment.

Oh no, I am fully aware, I am just saying that carriers in the US are ruthless and put their provisioning on everything.

Man talk about an over complicated process. But I guess you got to do what you got to do.

This is one thing I love about my Android. Used to use WifiTether, but since the modders cracked the built in hotspot app, tethering through these phones is just incredibly simple now. No need to pay those carrier fees and carriers can't do anything about it.

You still have to pay $10/year to use this though, so it's better to jailbreak IMO.

But if you are on Tmobile in the UK, they don't seem to have tethering restrictions.

They do but some networks charge to use it.

http://www.vodafone.co.uk/personal/m...odem/index.htm

£15 a month
For £15 a month you get 2GB of UK data. You can use this for voice calls (Skype, Google, Talk, etc) as well as tethering. If you go over, it’s £15 for each 1GB extra. Other networks do it for free on iPhone:

http://blog.o2.co.uk/home/2011/05/o2...-bolt-ons.html

Does tethering cost extra?
Not a penny! If you opt for one of our latest Pay Monthly tariffs with 500MB or 1GB of data, tethering is free. That means you can use your data allowance in the way that best suits you. You can see the options in our tariff table.

Thank goodness we don't have this problem (yet) in Malta, there are no extra charges or limits on tethering.

They might start doing it though since they started slinging MIFI devices as well recently.
