Charitable giving thread
The poll was slightly confusing, but I think I navigated it well... income between 20% and 80%, give between 0% and 10%.
|
Yeah, I made some mistakes. I could continue fixing it, but I think it is understandable now.
I Guess the 20-25k people will have to decide whether they are middle class or lower class. JM |
This is for discussion purposes, not to brag. I specifically picked numbers which were very 'wide'.
If you think it is unethical to be involved in this poll, then don't be involved in this poll. I think it is perfectly ethical. JM |
I think it's hard to compare US and EU, having such different tax and social benefit systems (even the minimal state-guaranteed income differ greatly AFAIK)
I am self employed and have made anything between 10k and over a 100k a year pre-tax. (It averages out pretty neatly over the course of 10 years now). I spend about 1k avarage on charities. These are deductible so one could say I actually spend 600 and the 'State' another 400. edit: oops, vote wrong # EU, $80k < income, 0% < give < 10% should go to # EU, $20k < income < $80k, 0% < give < 10% (I suppose http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif ) edit2: I simply put $=Euro, couldn't be bothered to look up the exchange rate. |

I know that in the EU, people voluntary vote to have a greater share of their incomes removed in taxes for what could be considered charitable purposes. JM |

I was intrigued by that comment as well http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/biggrin.gif.

I donate money and time. The time is at a youth center and is way more fulfilling to me than the $$$ I give.

Not really one for giving money, but I do occasionally when the mood takes me. Mainly I prefer to give in a concrete manner such, as donating unwanted items to charity shops, which I do on a regular basis. I've also done various sorts of volunteering; engaged in sponsored shaves and moustache growing; helped in the community; worked with the handicapped etc...
Probably what I'm most proud of was when I worked in the City and was a reading mentor for secondary school kids with reading difficulties in Tower Hamlets, the area I grew up in, which has some of the most deprived parts of the UK - sort of giving back to my community. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif My last thing was the other week when I wrote a cheque to the RSPCA when they took in and treated one of the local stray cats when she ended up in my garden with a gigantic abscess on her hip. We now have a pet cat. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...s/rolleyes.gif |
