True, but it's not personal. That is the difference. He'll insult pretty much everyone the same way. And yes, he likes to tease to get a reaction sometimes.

When I was a younger man, I had a kendo instructor who was an absolute ass to us. He was former navy and loved making gay jokes about those who couldn't keep up. Quite a few people couldn't take it and quit. Those of us who didn't quit, advanced in kendo at a tremendous rate. We accomplished in a few months what other dojos took over a year reach. Maybe it wasn't the best, but it did motivate and give us all a thicker skin. In the end, we all became really good friends with him and still keep in touch.
