Unfortunately there is nothing you can do lifestyle wise to effect your thyroid. Your thyroid function is really essential to staying alive so I wouldn't really rely on alternative methods (aside from a more natural drug like ChicaMia mentioned) alone.
Your thyroid really stops working mostly due to antibodies attacking it. Diet and lifestyle might have had something to do with it (inflamed immune system) but at this point the organ is so badly damaged you can't do much to reverse that. Reiki would help but it would take many treatments plus a lot of personal work on your part. You may also look into a blocked throat chakra. |

ask for armour thyroid instead of synthroid, it is more natural and works better for a lot of people. I am hypothyroid as well, it sucks, but there are many many natural alternatives. There is a yahoo group actually for natural thyroid treatments, you should look it up. I just joined it last night actually and so far there seems to be a lot of good information out there. |

I have been on thyroxine now for several years due to a badly underactive thyroid, i was unlucky to be ill with an underactive thyroid for 3 years before doctors finally diagnosed it, before then they just kept telling me i had depression (which is a symptom).
By the time i was finally put onto tablets, i had gained weight, was getting very bad dizzy spells, was very depressed, my hair had lost its shine, and just felt ill and tired all of the time, it was horrible. My personality also changed and i have lost a lot of confidence and do not go out the house too often any more. Now, although i feel a lot better, i dont feel great still, often tired i find everything difficult and tiring, the thyroxine halted my weight from going up any more but im finding it difficult to loose, even though i dont eat very much and what i do eat is healthy (mainly a salad for lunch and chicken and veg for dinner). I feel like a lot of my life has been wasted through feeling ill from this and would love to find something to perk me up and help me loose weight also. |

I went today to get my thyroid retested and soon I'll need to get a refill of the medicine but the doctor is considering upping the dose if neccessary since I've actually gained weight and also once I get my thyroid under control he said he'd consider perscribing diet pills to me. I know they would be perscribed but I don't know how I feel about diet pills because there's so much stigma attached to them and they all have side effects.
And I don't feel the thyroid/synthoid medicine has suppressed my appetite. |

I dont think the tablets stop your appetite, they never have with me unfortunately. They allow your metabolism to begin functioning more correctly again rather than making you not want to eat.
In most cases i have read that the levothyroxine (if thats what you are on) is not enough to fix every symptom. I am still waiting to find something that makes me feel completely better and energised and helps with weight loss. For me this started in my 20's and since i have had it i find the smallest thing very tiring, i would love for that to go away. |

I am on 150 mg myself, mostly what i have read on the net are pages like this one http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com...eds-dont-work/
which talk about the fact that T4 (thyroxine) by itself doesnt do the job of curing all the symptoms. Various different sites suggest extra meds needed to completely bring the range of the body back to normal again, i myself have been along to my doctor who is clueless and i have been informed that the extra meds are not available in my country (UK) and so i will have to go without. Personally i dont think this is good enough but i dont know what to do about it. update: I have decided to try this http://yournutritionshop.co.uk/shopd...asp?search=yes the glandular treatment avail to buy, i will let you know if it works. |

this is a very interesting thread! i was diagnosed with hypothyroid when i was pregnant and young. never had been tested for it before, but once i got pregnant i couldn't even climb the stairs on my second floor apt without feeling i was going to fall backwards exhausted! i would actually make my hubby walk behind me, kind of hoisting my butt up!! can you say CRANE!?!?! anyways, i didn't know so many people suffered from this problem! it seems that my meds have never helped enough, but since it was my OBGYN that prescribed me the meds and my insurance doesn't cover an endocrinologist, i'm SOL. LOVE the info though on some other meds and various treatments!!!
i have a Q for all you who posted here so far. it's quite embarassing and i'm going to be further embarassed if you all say that you've no idea what i'm talking about and i'm some kind of freak!!! i have EXCESSIVE SWEATING!!! not all over, thank god, mostly on my neck and up. any little thing and i'm fully drenched *no exageration* it looks as if someone has poured a bucket of water over my head. it's sooo embarassing!!! i've asked and asked, and no one has ever given me an answer as to what it could be, then i looked online and it doens't list that as a symptom of thyroid problems??? which is what i've always thought it was caused by. i've been very menopausal since i had kids *i'm 23 NOW*!!! well, since i started taking birth control, really. i've no clue what it's all about..... |

Hiya Mis,
Sorry to hear about your troubles with thyroid also, i know how annoying it all is. Unfortunately part of the problem with low thyroid seems to be the inability to regulate body temp ok which could cause more sweating than others, although you mention menopausal symptoms and the pill and that can cause it also i believe. For me i have a great anti perspirant which completely stops me from sweating under my arms, but on especially hot days my face will sweat a lot and sometimes my back which is annoying, however it is not to an extent that its noticeable. Normal day to day though i dont have too much of a problem either. This is a list of symptoms i found for low thyroid, sadly i get around 80 percent or so of these here still even though i am on thyroxine. The thought of living the rest of my life feeling this way is frankly depressing. Less stamina than others Less energy than others Long recovery period after any activity Inability to hold children for very long Arms feeling like dead weights after activity Chronic Low Grade Depression Suicidal Thoughts Often feeling cold Cold hands and feet High or rising cholesterol Bizarre and Debilitating reaction to exercise Hard stools Constipation No eyebrows or thinning outer eyebrows Dry Hair Hair Loss White hairs growing in No hair growth, breaks faster than it grows Dry cracking skin Nodding off easily Requires naps in the afternoon Sleep Apnea (which can also be associated with low cortisol) Air Hunger (feeling like you can’t get enough air) Inability to concentrate or read long periods of time Forgetfulness Foggy thinking Inability to lose weight Always gaining weight Inability to function in a relationship with anyone NO sex drive Moody periods PMS Inability to get pregnant; miscarriages Excruciating pain during period Nausea Swelling/edema/puffiness Aching bones/muscles Osteoporosis Bumps on legs Acne on face and in hair Breakout on chest and arms Hives Exhaustion in every dimension–physical, mental, spiritual, emotional Inability to work full-time Inability to stand on feet for long periods Complete lack of motivation Slowing to a snail’s pace when walking up slight grade Extremely crabby, irritable, intolerant of others Handwriting nearly illegible Internal itching of ears Broken/peeling fingernails Dry skin or snake skin Major anxiety/worry Ringing in ears Lactose Intolerance Inability to eat in the mornings Joint pain Carpal tunnel symptoms No Appetite Fluid retention to the point of Congestive Heart Failure Swollen legs that prevented walking Blood Pressure problems Varicose Veins Dizziness from fluid on the inner ear Low body temperature Raised temperature Tightness in throat; sore throat Swollen lymph glands Allergies (which can also be a result of low cortisol–common with hypothyroid patients) Headaches and Migraines Sore feet (plantar fascitis); painful soles of feet colitis irritable bowel syndrome |
