Our league has a rule that if a ball is lost in the rough, you just drop it where you thought it landed with a one stroke penalty. Speeds up play.

The rough on my local course has been heinous early this year due to a wet spring. Now it's drying out and is more playable.
In the meantime, it has put people into desparation mode.
One of the guys on my team, a high handicapper, but also a sharp guy, came up with an alternative to the above (league) rule.
He said, "I can declare a ball unplayable off the tee. That way I can retee, drop within two clublengths, or walk back from the ball (?) keeping that point on a line with the green."
(the advantage here, obviously, is only a one-stroke penalty).
Me: "Hey Jim, you have to find the ball to say it is unplayable."
Him: "Only I can say the ball is unplayable."
Me: "Yes, after you find it. If you don't, the lost ball rule comes into play. Nice try."
