Default Here's The Kiss Of Death: I'm Playing The Best Golf Of My Life
I've been at our around a 9 for years now. Since this is the case I haven't bothered to keep a handicap, face it it's a pain in the ass. Plus I like to be able to bag a bad round instead of recording every shot for an entire season to be honest.

So I signed up at the local shop to play in some tourneys and they require a real handicap. As luck would have it I'm in the hottest streak of my life. So I went back and posted all the rounds I could remember and now am sporting a 6.2 index. This really isn't a fair handicap because in April I was throwing up a lot of big numbers but in all honesty I don't remember the scores.

But my bubble is about to burst. I am taking a trip to Charleston, SC on Friday. I will be playing with my best friend who is shooting under par virtually every round out these days. Plus we will play back tees on brutally hard courses in big wind.

I can see it now:

89
86
91
88

The way we used to do it with regards to handicap was we would have one day a year by which we'd go out and play...and whatever we did that day was our handicap for the year. It was much simpler.

This eventually died out because A) a couple of us became scratch golfers and wanted to do away with handicaps, greedy bastards we are and B) it got to the point that every season at least one putz would show up with nothing but either a 9 or a 7 iron (not even a putter) and no tees. One year we even had a guy who took his 9 and had it turned 5 degrees flat before showing up so that he'd more consistently send his ball into the woods.

WTF??

PS You are a scratch golfer? I'm very impressed.

Handicap Day is stupid, just gives people another chance to cheat. At our course you don't play in events without a handicap. If you don't post your handicap scores they will take you off the handicap list and put you as a 0.

This year's turning out just like every other year for me. Swore over the winter I'd practice more, play more, and get to single digits. Then it's our busy time of the year again and I barely have time to play, much less practice.
I throw just enough rounds in the 70's to stay at 12, then there are 84's and 85's. No short game touch, no time to work on it. Hitting the ball right in the nuts as a general rule but losing strokes around the green due to lack of touch.

A scratch golfer changes the angle of the club face so he can hit more 9 irons out of play? That's F.U. You can cheat better than that.

Can't imagine hitting many 9 irons that far off line, and I'm an 11.

Regular posting of scores is important. It elevates your credibility in the eyes of people who know at your club. I got lazy for a while too, but since I'm playing more tourny's I realize the importance of putting in scores regularly.

Hell, the computer at our course is ancient, and still it only takes about 20 seconds to enter a score.

Just need to get in the habit.

Well that particular guy wasn't a scratch golfer. He was about a 5 handicap (so still pretty low, but still). The showing up with 1 club thing was funny at first and just kind of became a tradition that SOMEBODY would do it each year after a while. Nobody was allowed to intentionally cheat though--we actually were pretty on about that. No aiming 30 yards left of the pin or the like permitted, which is what brought on the guy to sabotage his own club. He told us he had done it after the fact and we voted to put him at 0.

We were just (suffice to say) a very, VERY competitive bunch. Unfortunately I was so competitive I couldn't even tank handicap day.

Even without the bullshit establishing a handicap based on one round is insane. Especially when a lot of players are like me, where my last 2 rounds were 78 and 88.

We always played 36 on H-Day over 2 courses.

Still say one day to establish a handicap is like judging Labron James on last night's performance alone.
