This is something I have always wondered about since I've never had the pleasure to play on one. On TV they look about like the greens at the courses I frequent.
I also wonder if that's why the ball rolls so much on tee shots, or if that just comes down to technique and angle of descent. |

I have only played on a course like that once....I played the Hermitage Golf Course just outside of Nashville the Tuesday right after the LPGA Sara Lee Classic. Now this was like 15+ years ago...but the fairways were as closely mown as the greens at my home course and the greens were like putting on glass...you just had to start the ball on your intended line and it took off...they were fast as hell!
As far as the extra roll, the closely mown fairways could add a little to that, but I think it's more that they have everything tuned...even the angle of decent to maximize roll when the ball lands. I know that my fitter looked at that at the Callaway Performance Center at Barton Creek in Austin when I was fit for my Morgan Cup clubs. |

I went to last years US Open and the tv cameras in my opinion don't pick up how tight the fairways are. For instance the 18th hole at congressional- I was standing there watching bubba and Phil bomb it about these trees nearly out of sight. That hole alone was close to 30 yards wide with 4+ inch thick rough. It was really cool since some of the stuff you seen in person can't be seen on tv
